was looking to buy a multiboard for a converted primal rage cab. figure just add 2 buttons to each side and im in. how hard are they to set up and which one has the best games and plays the best? thanks Paul

multi

i was thinking like the 1072 or 192 or whatever there is out there now

The 1072 in 1 is junk. the 1208 in 1 upgrade makes it a little better but it still doesnt have enough horsepower to run NBA JAM TE.

Hell yes +1

And then you can use a program called romlister to filter all the garbage games out as well as allowing you to select vertical or horizontal games only. In essence it provides you greater filter capabilities than MAME provides. I have mine filtered and have ~2400 individual games (no clones) rather than trying to impress people showing over 8000.

I have a horiz I want to mame. Forgive me for asking, but where can I find the video vard that will attach to an arcade monitor? I know I havw seen it somewhere, but can't find it right now.

And you can still play vertical games on a MAME with a horiz monitor right?

I've used the ArcadeVGA card several times. Works great.

ok convert to mame

so if i have a working primal rage cab how much will it cost to convert to mame ballpark and what all will i need? also i have a few 25in cabs and would be willing to pay someone to convert one or more or give them cabs. thx Paul

I have a cab that I have been converting to MAMEOX (XBOX running MAME) for the past year. I'm just about finished I just need to finish hacking a 2nd controller for the 2nd player controls.

I used an old TV for the display and have thought about going with a 25" since I have about 2-3 TV's laying around that I'm not using.

If you can solder then you can hack an xbox controller. The xbox has to be modded and once it's modded you can FTP the files to your HDD or simply burn a disk. I have done both but prefer the disk method. Once you boot the Machine it gives you a splashscreen for the program and takes you directly to the game menu.

My brother modded my XBOX so I never had the need to learn but I'm sure it's pretty easy. I'm somewhat familiar with the process but haven't had a need to do it yet.

I also have a Blue Elf 311-1 and it runs most games okay except for the CPS1 Capcom fighting games. You might want to look at the list of games that's on the board and see if it's worth your consideration.

Lots of options and deciding factors.
1.) Do you want the ability to use guns? If so you need to pick a cab that supplies a decent monitor angle.

2.) Speaking of monitors - unless you have a tri-res monitor to utilize the VGA output from the PC you can either use a TV (blech) or you'll need to obtain a video card that'll run the res of your monitor (like an Arcadevga card) from ultimarc.

3.) Do you want to play games like Gauntlet Legends? If so then you'll need a PC with lots of horsepower (3.4ghz minimum) of course you'll need to over clock the proc. I would highly suggest you buy a proc that is 64bit capable and run a 64bit OS as the performance benefits are huge.
Otherwise games like Pacman and Donkey Kong require very little juice and damn near any PC laying around these days will play those games. If you don't have something "laying around" try checking your your local goodwills and pick one up for cheap.

The thing it will cost you the most is... time. ;)

I'm still working on setting all my ROMs on one HD w/ MALA so it'd be relatively "plug and play." It's a work-in-progress though, not sure when I'll be done.

For a MAME cab, pick up a PC CRT monitor off of Craigslist.org. You can pick up 21" monitors for $30 or less.

Non-official estimation:

$30 21" PC monitor
$??? Computer to run mame (300mHz or better for older games, 1gHz or better for most games)
$35 for a keyboard encoder
$?? joysticks/trackball/buttons Anywhere from $30 to $130, here.

Small things, like surge protector, (preferably a UPS one) woodworking to mount the monitor, um... Do you want a keyboard/mouse drawer? The better alternative to that is get a wireless mouse and keyboard, then you can keep that wherever.

It's a damn shame you're not closer, I'd help you do it. Are you still interested in that trade we were discussing, or no? (Talk the wife into the idea of a human gyroscope yet? :D)

PC monitors with MAME = LAME. Stick with an arcade monitor... especially if you already have one in the cab. Of my 3 MAME cabs, 2 have arcade monitors and the cocktail has a PC monitor... but I use the cocktail primarily as a jukebox so it doesn't count.

Frizz,
(not to try and hijack or change the subject but since mame was mentioned.....)
Since you seem like the "Mameking" around here - Its getting to be time for me to redo my mame cab again and was wondering what your using for a front end. Last time around I used atomicFE - its nice, but I figured Id try something else - got something better?
thanks!!

Frizz uses Mamewah.
Computer monitors aren't my favorite either - I'm sure no one can argue the visual candy/experience with a real arcade monitor VS a TV or PC monitor.

As I mentioned in another thread of MAME - I like AtomicFE and I also love Hyperspin. Too each their own. Most of these FE's are free - download them and try them and form your own opinion. You'll find so many FE's are really trying to resemble one another. For example AtomicFE can be made to look like Hyperspin ;)

I've tried all of them, and my favorite by a long shot was MALA... :004_ssmile:
