The thing these dudes are wearing:

I vaguely remember the arcade ops wearing them when I was a wee lad. I also remember the full service gas station guy wearing one that dispensed all types of coins.

I would love to have one for my gameroom. That mystical item was an object of pure unadulterated POWER when I was little. All those coins...I wanted them badly.

Anyways, anyone have a technical name I can search ebay for? Anyone know of a source? Anyone have one they'll sell me for dirt cheap? ;)

Is it just me or does the guy in the red jacket look like he has a giant club foot? The hell with the coin dispenser, I want the outfit that the two wannabe badasses have on.

ha.. I was joking about getting one of these at work.. after I put in a pop and vending machine... others would just die if I walked in wearing one...

Coin changer

I have an old one that works if anyone wants it. $15 shipped. It is the 4 barrel size that holds Quarters, dimes, nickles and pennies.

4 barrel quarters only would kick ass for an arcade party. yeah you would look nerdy but that would be the whole point. Get some good laughs.

I still have mine from when I delivered papers back in the day. It's sitting in my office on a shelf. It's funny because my nieces and nephews asked me what it was, and while I was telling them I also explained how 25+ years ago if you wanted something you worked for it not like today where you just whine to your parents and they give it you.

Birth control is right on target. Good one.

I would think one that only held quarters would be mostly useless for an actual arcade attendant. What would he use it for? People with dollar bills that wanted 4 quarters? That's what the change machines were for; so it would only be useful for the "machine won't take my dollar" scenarios.

The idea behind having 4 barrels, one each for quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies; (5 barrel ones, if they exist, probably have two quarter barrels) is to be able to give a quarter to the kids who have two dimes and a nickel; or a dime and three nickels; or three nickels and 10 pennies; etc. With a quarter-only dispenser (if there is such a thing), he'd have to dump all the coins that he receives into his pocket, or keep running back and forth to the cash register to dump them in there.

People are weird... in an arcade, you can light up a change machine with neon signs, spot lights, and put a dancing midget on top of them... people will still walk RIGHT by them and ask you for change for a dollar. I've been thinking about getting one of these belts for when I'm at the arcade, because people never want change for a dollar as bad as they do when you've JUST pulled out a machine and got the back off of it to work on it... THEN it's change time!

I only tried that once as a kid (and yes, the guy had the belt-mounted coin dispenser) and got told to use the change machine.

When I tell people there's a change machine, and point it out to them (they would've had to walk RIGHT by it when they came in). I get the looks like I'm the asshole that doesn't know how an arcade works. And we do have to make change for 5's 10's and 20's... so I guess they see us doing that, and figure they can get $20 worth of change from us, a dollar at a time, spread out over an hour...
