I have had my Outrun passively for sale for about a year now, and I have had about 5 interested parties. 4 of the 5 were from Europe. I also see folks like sonnyburnett and other Europeans owning and praising this game. What gives? I loved this game in '86/ '87 when it was new. That's why I bought one. But other Americans don't seem to value this game very highly. Were there too many made? People pissed off about no high score save? What?

I think its a pretty hard game to find. I'd like to find one and another Afterburner someday.

Outrun takes you on routes based off of stuff in Europe?

Maybe?

....Meh, that's a bit of a stretch.

It was extremely popular in the arcades. There's something about the smoothness of the game and it just was ground-breaking when it was first released.

Not sure why this would be a Euro-only thing though. I know about everybody loves Outrun here who's in the hobby, but I only know one or two people who have an upright.
IMHO the game needs to be played in the full-motion sit-down to be truly appreciated and that's also the big problem: space.

Uprights are not extremely rare here, they pop up every now and then for sale and get good prices.

I've owned both, but this one I am selling is the upright. I actually like the shaker motor better than the full-motion feature of the sitdown.

About 2 years ago I still saw one on location earning money. It was in a pretty sad condition though... I only played the sit-down so far. In fact, I've only seen the full-size sit downs around here. I don't think I ever saw an upright or the smaller sit-down on location here...

There are at least 2 Outrun SP 4 car-sets in operation in The Netherlands today, which may indicate the love for the game.

i like it, and im from the newer generation, something about the classic behind car racers thats awesome. I have top speed, which is pretty much the same as outrun for the most part, without the ferrari. I play it all the time.

I had one and got rid of it. I just didn't play it much. The autostart freeplay was annoying as well. We have one in one of the labs at school, and I think I have seen it played 4 or 5 times in the last 2 years.

I sell a lot of my NOS Sega parts to people in the UK. I'd say 60% are Outrun parts the 40% are Afterburner parts.

I am in England and love outrun! Still the odd one to be found in Arcades here and still taking money (although they tend to get snapped up if found). I don't know why, its just a classic game that I certainly can keep going back to, maybe it was the lack of decent home conversion back in the day....and I plan to own one....one day, so if anyone has a PCB they want to get rid of, do let me know!

I wasn't a big fan of Outrun until I got two. Once you get used to the shaker motor it's hard to play without it. The free play mode sucks and the lack of high score saves is annoying as hell. But I read somewhere that the stages were based on driving in Europe. But my guess that's it's popular in Europe because there aren't alot of them there.

Well, mine will be on it's way to Belgium in the next few weeks. So +1 to the Outrun Tally in Europe.

I love Outrun and Turbo Outrun and have always wanted the original since 86' but for some reason I can't bring myself to spend the $400 + for one, don't know why I just can't do it.
