I have been noticing lately on CL ads when people are selling that they say "this game comes from my personal collection."

Um, what exactly does that mean? Does everyone have 2 seperate collections? One personal and one not? How do games become personal to one? What about all the other games? Are they allowed to someday grow up and be worthy enough of a personal collection? What makes a game more personal that another?

I'm confused.

It's a way of distancing yourself from the operator guys. A way of saying it came out of a low abuse environment in your home, than from a high abuse place like a pizza parlor.

In the end though, it is a dumb thing to say.

My personal collection means it's been well taken care of, it's been loved, caressed, talked to in a polite loving manner and should be worth more cuz i said so. I know i've used this a few times but this statemnt and home use only are really overrated. I've yet to see a "HUO" or "from my personal colletion" machine that i would put in my gameroom as it is. My bud Tapper was a HUO from my personal collection machine yet it looked like it had been in an arcade it's entire life when it arrived at my door.

Sometimes it is code for:

"I am sentimentally attached to said machine, so don't try talking me down from the high price I am asking."

"My wife wanted me to sell this one, so I put up this ad... but I don't really want to sell it."

"Buy my machine so I can take the money and buy the same machine in better shape from some other guy."

When did you become Jerry Seinfeld? :)

For me, it distinguishes the keepers from the ones that I have possession of, but no real ownership in.

The games in the gameroom are part of my personal collection, the ones in various storage facilities are not.

I think I can improve upon that. My next CL listing.

Finally! A chance to buy a classic arcade game straight from Clay's personal collection! As you probably know, this is a once in a lifetime opportunity, to have a chance to own a game that has enjoyed a life few other classic games can imagine, that of being in Clay's personal collection. Words alone are not enough to describe the magnitude of this offer. If you think you're not worthy, you're probably right.

If you think you *are* worthy, bring a loincloth and a trident. Once you have defeated my Minotaur, we will talk price.

To me it always meant it's a game that he bought for his own use... not the ones that he buys to sell and make a profit.

Now when you say "keeper"... Do you mean our idea of what keeper is, or Jow's concept of a "keeper?"

Why you always have to get all serious about posts that are clearly in a joking matter? You one of those chicks that are on the rag all the time, and dont have time for humor? Geez man

I can't take it anymore - I want a divorce

A serious answer to an inane question:

Games from my "personal collection" are games I have owned, kept for an extended period of time, and played often - and I wouldn't be getting rid of it if I had tons of money, wasn't having a baby or going through a divorce, had room for it, etc.

These are distinguishable from games I picked up for free that I planned to do something with someday but didn't, or have no real interest in keeping.

It also lets people know I am a private seller, and am not spamming CL with a bunch of games I'm selling from a warehouse raid or retail business....

It means there may be some white stains in the coin returns and some brown ones on the joystick.

makes sense to me. personal collection means you arent a retailer or secondhand junk dealer trying to pawn off some piece of shit you know nothing about. personal collection should mean its something you care enough to have bought for yourself, not just a quick flip to make a couple bucks.

I think it is a good thing to say...

It's kind of like when you call your car a daily driver...

This isn't some shit that has been sitting in a barn. And it's not something that I am trying to flip for money.
