What inspired you to get into this hobby?

Burger Stop, Orange Julius and Chick-Fil-A FTW!

Also the cutthroat competition between Sears, Sterns and Steinbachs anchor stores. Pure fire. Do you recall the Gadgets downstairs in the mall? It was sort of a pizza place/arcade aimed more at kids I think but their game selection I thought was superior. My fondest arcade memory is going to a pizza party there when they first put Cliff Hanger out on the floor right in the middle of the arcade. I used all my tokens that day on it and had to get one for my home when I was able. I also recall there being a local kid who was a bit slow but was lights out on Crazy Climber there. All these memories that sort of flash into my head at times but since I was still pretty young, not entirely recall are sort of also what made me get into this hobby. Trying to recreate those scattered memories, I'm trying to remember fully. Doesn't really work that way, but it's fun to try. Every once in awhile though I'll remember something from those days like where a game was or someone I saw there all the time but never knew their name, etc.

I didn't spend a lot of time in that mall, I was across the street in the Eatontown Mall. But those memmories are great.

i had surgery and to pass the recovery time i bought a donkey kong/donkey kong jr to pass the time.500k later i bought a championship sprint not working-fixed it and the kept going till i finished my collection a year and a half later!

Cool. Eatontown now has that Chick Fil-A. They had a Supercade back in the day if I'm not mistaken...and a Caldor's...lol. Caldor's.

I am one of the younger people here, so I never lived during the "golden age" of games. However, I became interested in this hobby when I went to Videotopia about 7 or 8 years ago when it was in San Antonio. When I saw all those classic games, I knew I wanted to have one!

It worked for you. Or did you just casually mention to Latinogirl that you are the Gorf World Champ ;)

I wrote about how I became cursed with this hobby on my blog :

Dave, that was a cool read. I recently found out that the owner of my arcade of choice growing up was named Yogi - surely the same guy. Arcade was Galactican near Saratoga Ave and Prospect Rd in SJ. It would be so cool to find him and get COSP to do an arcade owner chat or something. Heck, I wish I could just find some pics of that old arcade. When we were down there for CAX I even drove the family to the spot where it was and told them "that's where Daddy used to always go to play arcade games!" So I too owe Yogi for providing the seed that eventually led to this hobby for me!

For me it was good ole' money! I started in the "hobby" as a tech in 1984... Been in it ever since.

Well the fact that I collect console games doesn't hurt... but it was the desire to play an arcade perfect version of Donkey Kong. Outside of MAME, there isn't one, and I happened to be in the right place at the right time.

It has to be the same guy.

i played as a kid, then on my atari 5200 and c64 at home. in the late 90's, i got into mame, then around 2000, i saw a ms pac at the mile high flea market for $150. couldn't get it, but that inserted the "you can own those yourself!?" thought into my brain. within a year i owned a nice pac, that i paid way too much for, and here i am today.

Well the arcades help you pick up hot chicks when they are the right hot chicks. If they aren't into the games, then the probably aren't hot enough......Geez, I hope Evapa realizes just how lucky he is! HA HA

Late bump, but it was Yogi who owned Galactikan. Wish I could find his contact info, I'd kill for some photos of the place. The guy who ran it for him, Corey, he has contact info all over the net, problem is he doesn't respond to emails :/

Was it friends who had games? Was it a desire to restore something to like new condition? Maybe you wanted to bring back that feeling of being a teenager again, playing a cool arcade game at your favorite hangout?

For me I guess for as long as I can remember I wanted to bring home an arcade game. From the very first time I played Space Invaders to a few years later when I first played Gorf; I wanted to have ALL of them in my house. Once I was able to buy the house I grew up in then it was a matter of finishing off my basement into an arcade. By the time I got it done I had 18 of em in my living room ready to be moved down. Every time I go down there it just brings back those carefree childhood memories, I love it...

Similar for me... I always loved arcades and always wanted to own them. Mid 90's while in college, I discovered they could be bought, but I had no place for them. Fast forward to 2002 when we bought our first house and moved out of our apartment, I immediately built a MAME cabinet and started buying games. Seven years later, and I have more of an arcade than I ever thought I would, and with just some finishing touches I will soon consider it the ultimate home gameroom that I've always wanted.

For me, it's mostly about nostalgia, but I also really enjoy playing the games. I've spent a lot of time restoring and fixing games as well, but the desire to do that is wearing off. With 2 young kids, I don't have the time or desire to invest that kind of time, I want to spend time playing them with the kids.

Yogi was the effin BOMB to work for. I really miss that guy and his crazy shoes! I worked for him for about 4 years, just before he took over the Galactikan. I heard that he's still in Northern California some where and even showed up at a Pin-A-Go-Go about 7 years ago.

Ah the good ole' days!

Oh, the funny thing is that every time I see GorfChampion's avatar I think that he's Yogi! Sure looks like him in that small pic.

My first arcade machine purchase, and the start of wanting to own arcade machines was also my best score ever.

Owning my first machine was a total 'by chance' event that took place back in 1992.

I was with a friend of mine driving and he said "hey i want to stop by this guy's place and say goodbye cause he is moving - do you care?" i said No and we went over to his friend's house.

we go in and beyond a couple of boxes in the living room the house was empty. His friend was was just cleaning the walls and so forth. At some point during the conversation we went downstairs for something and as I walk into the family room in the corner both fully lit and turned on are a Defender and a Tron. Both were working and looked to be in fabulous shape. The rest of the room was empty.

I commented on how nice the machines were and his friend says "Yeah I gotta come back for those, don't have room on the truck"

So I jokingly say "Hey if you don't want to deal with coming back here, i'll give you $125 for both of them"

he looks at me and says "you got cash?"

I tell him "I will in 10 minutes DON'T F*CKING LEAVE" and run to my truck and shot up to the local 7 eleven and used the ATM.

Took both machines home that day and played the hell out of them. Made the tragic mistake of selling them to a friend of mine in 1999 who put them in an auto-body shop... literally in the shop... bought them back in 2003 in pretty rough shape compared to how they were when I let them go but I still have the Tron to this day :)

UPDATE: Beyond Tron and a Defender I didn't collect anything for years. Recently bought a used cab to make a MAME machine and after seeing karl's collection at his house, well now I'm hunting cabs and can't keep my mind of of arcades. I guess I owe FullThrottle for my second round of 'the sickness' ;)

Ignorance got me in the hobby. If I know what I did back when I thought about getting one to see how it works... I would never done it :)

One word: MAME.

You should get an award for posting that first! :D

Yes.

Just bought my first dedicated machine, and am probably going to end up a convert like the others for more classics. I love how my Joust boots up in, like, 10 seconds or less!

One word: MAME. As much as some folks like to give MAME a hard time... the reality of the situation is that MAME has brought MANY MANY folks in to this community.
