What I Dislike Most About Champion Sprint (and others)

CONTINUES. I hate them. The biggest disservice arcade manufacturers did to players was to allow continues with your score being unaffected. I don't mind CONTINUES per-se... it's the CONTINUES with the score remaining to build on is what I have an issue with. The very rare game will allow continues and allow the score to continue as well, but will post the number of coins next to the score... and that's OK too... it's the games where you can't tell which high scores are associated with multiple coins and which are not that I have a problem with.

Championship Sprint, evidently, is one of them. APB was one of them. It sucks. It pisses me off. What sucks even more is that I can't seem to determine if there is a way to turn off continues or, at least, limit them to 3 coins or something.

Basically, what allowing continues like that does is it gives the high score to the schmuck who can pump the most coin in to the machine rather than the one with the most skill. What that does to us as collectors is that means the one who can push the freakin' start button most wins.

Boo...

I wish there was a way to adjust that....anyone know of anything?

That's what makes SS and CS so good. How many races can you win in a row before your game is over?

4 or 5 right now...

...but unlimited credits? That kills the whole idea of a high score table. It would be cool if you could limit it to 3 or 5 credits for continues. I THINK A.P.B. allowed for that option, but don't quote me on that.

I agree, but if you are looking at TG settings, 1 quarter is all you get. I think I can win 3 races in a row, and then the game cheats :D Those are some of the smaller WR #'s ever, but on the same token, those scores are tough to beat. Give it a try...

If you havent gotten to the speed cones, then you havent seen everything the game has to offer. I usually play my super sprint 1 coin style, and have beaten the TG world record, which I do not think is very impressive, but nonetheless, I consider myself phantom champion : )

What are the speed cones? The little bumper looking things that come out of the track?

I like how pinball machines differentiate buy-in continue high scores from the normal score board. This should have become general practice in arcade games as well.

Buy-in continues on a pin is the dumbest thing I have ever seen. I HATE that function even more than continues on a video game.

It is stupid, but at least they split the high score tables.

Well on DMD pins you can just turn off the buy in feature, which is what I always did. Unfortunately most classic videogames don't offer that option. It is the only bad thing about Moon Patrol. I always just see how far I can get on one quarter.

It's not a huge deal, but it is kindof annoying. They had to do what they had to do to make money I guess... if it weren't for buyins, arcades might have died even sooner.

The high score table on my SS has something like 13mil as the high score. Someone must have had a serious gaming session to rack that up. It is pretty annoying.

I always start with the more diffuclt levels first. The AI is easy at the begining. The idea is to have the fourth race on the easiest course (the circular track). That way I have a fighting chance.

Atari's are notorious for having glitchy HS tables (my Paperboy had one, JeffC's 720 had one, etc.) Reset the high scores, and if it continues, replace the X2804 EEPROM. I used an X2816 as a replacement, and it worked perfectly.

Wait, you said you have a SS and not a CS huh... I wonder if its the same chip?

Yeah, I hate high scores that continue on with extra quarters. My 13 year old niece now has the high score on my Arkanoid 2: Revenge of Doh because she kept playing.

I beleive Paperboy and SS ROMS are interchangeable.

My buddy just recorded a world record CS score at my place this past weekend. I don't know if it has been officially verified yet but here is the youtube link he posted;

[If you havent gotten to the speed cones]

watch the race before the speedcones, around 4:30...
I thought he was down and out... I usually give up at that point but he made quite a comeback. He beat the speedcone race as well...

even though it is OT,

We also had our first DK (TG verified settings) killscreen at my arcade as well.

Hank Chien was at 900K when the killscreen kicked in with 1 jumpman in reserve.

good times... good times
