I also had a Midway Double Play royally kick my ass once.

atari color vectors. just because there's so many possibilities for issues. probably star wars, i'd say, from all the posts i've seen.

Yep, got a Star Castle that I've tinkered on and off again for about three years now. I get so pissed at that thing that I have to walk away from it for several months at a time just to cool off enough to be able to work on it again.

I'll add to this:

Whichever one seems to be an easy fix, but you don't have the part handy, so you either have to order it and wait or drive somewhere and get. Then you put it in and find out there is another problem that wasn't evident until you replaced that part but now you need another part you don't have, etc. etc...
 
Games with card racks like Gorf. My professor pac was a real pain to get fixed. Its not bad if you have a spare working boardset that you can swap boards out to narrow down the problem to one board. The professor pac has like 6 boards in the rack. I now have a couple extra working boardsets for it so im good to go.
 
Spy Hunter was/is a pain.

My Star Trek project was fairly painless but I had a lot of help from Chad and Mongo.

Right now I am trying to get my Nanao monitor in my Indy 500 working properly.
 
Galaga - so many physical issues to rule out before you can even get to the chippery.

Crappy sockets
Crappy ribbon cables
Crappy fragile resistor networks
Crappy sockets on the board for power and video that usually have been badly soldered to.
Custom chips with legs that go black with oxide over time.

And anything after about 1995 when everything seemed to go surface mount custom ICs, theres a limite to what you can do without a microscope.
 
I'd say Berzerk at the moment ! Of course the battery damage, but those connectors look to be very unreliable too....why all those loose boards etc. (I know the color was "hacked on" later).
I think they did reach one goal with the complicated set-up: I've never heard about a bootleg Berzerk ! :D

I've been very lucky with my SW I guess. Got two working board-sets. Only issue with the board-sets were 2 bad Vector Rams, which was too easy to fix :)

I find working on Amplifone's a breeze now....

+1 but once you get them working they tend to stay that way for a long while.

Bally MCR games. Tron, Spy Hunter, etc. So many connectors, weird power supply, just all around a pain in the butt. And then once you think it's working good and solid, something else weird happens.

Baby Pac-Man. Battery on the board causes acid damage, lots of lousy connectors, this game has it all!

Ever see what the inside of a sega virtua racing looks like, wow, where do you start. . . that is one of the only cabinets i have ever seen that is actually packed full of eletronics. .
