What game bug or cheat do you know now that you wish you did back in the day?

So, I'm wondering... in our new found technical wisdom, what bug or cheat do you know now that you wish you would have known back in the days of lurking around the local arcade?

For me: Dragon's Lair!! the "hold stick + sword while crediting" that gives you unlimited lives. I would have been the king of the world back in the day!!! 50 cents and I get to sit on Dragon's Lair all day long?! I wonder if ANYONE new this trick back then... I don't recall it floating around.

I wish I had known all the moves I do for Street Fighter now.

Back in the day I could never pull off anything more than the hadoken.

The Galaga one where you can hang off to the side of the screen and make the enemies stop shooting.

The konami code also brings up a data list on Street Fighter 2. The last two buttons are strong jab instead of B A I believe. Has to be done during the fight demo.

There were a couple tricks that I knew of but didt know the particulars to pull off. Unlimited men on DKJR and hurdle trick on T&F.

I never even heard of the Dragon Lair trick. That's a cool one.

You could punch in the NES Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! codes in the PC-10 version. I got to do that BIID; couldn't believe they worked!

+1

I used to play Galaga a ton and this would have been "helpful" :)

Any/All of them. I didn't know any cheats or bugs or tricks _at all_ BITD. Like a chump I just wailed away on the sticks and buttons and hoped for the best.

Heck, I used to wonder what Obi Wan was talking about when he told me to "Use the Force!" I thought it was just a meaningless way to involve you in the game until I owned a SW and stumbled upon it because I got distracted trying to power on and coin up another game for a guest. I almost crapped bricks when I got the bonus and it hit me what just happened.

I won a Journey album long ago playing Journey in an Aladdin's Castle and getting the high score. The bug was you could get the drummer to keep bouncing on the drums and they wouldn't go away. I played it a bit in MAME but couldn't remember what level it happened on or how to do it.

The Galaga demo crash/freeze bug (I documented it on the KLOV entry years ago). It's a great way to ensure those pesky high scores are reset before playing to ensure my score is the highest. :>

BUG: A bug exists in Galaga and Ms. Pac-Man/Galaga Namco Galaga, some Midway Galaga, Gallag bootleg and Nebulous Bee bootleg - Class of '81 that allows a player to play during the Galaga demo screen and even reset the game. The demos are the same for both Galaga and Ms. Pac-Man/Galaga - Class of '81, and the bug works the same way, but the result is a little different between the two Galagas.

During the Galaga demo, the Galaga character comes down and tries to tractor-beam up the player's ship. As soon as that tractor-beam starts, the player can take control of the ship in the demo. The player has two choices here and this will effect how the game handles this bug:

* If the player allows himself to be captured, the demo will continue as normal and he has the option of controlling the player ship or not. The player can choose whether to save the captured ship, try to complete the level, etc. The demo mode will complete after 30 seconds and the high-score screen will appear.
* If the player takes control of the ship and destroys the Galaga with the tractor beam, he will be able to continue playing until the "normal" demo would have completed. At this point the game will do one of two things depending on whether the person is playing an original Galaga or Ms. Pac-Man/Galaga - Class of '81:
o Galaga: Some of the characters on the screen will freeze while others are still moving and doing what they are suppose to be doing. This will last 15-20 seconds, then the game will go to the high score screen.
o Ms. Pac-Man/Galaga - The game will make a loud buzz sound, blank the screen and then show a diagnostics screen with the version number of the games, a RAM and ROM test, etc. This screen will stay for approximately ten seconds before returning to the high score screen. If someone needs to know the version of software on their boardset, this can be a handy way of finding out without opening the cabinet.

I'll never forget that one. NES Punch Out was my favorite game. I could finish it completely without being hit.

I've tried that Galaga trick on a real machine and haven't been able to get it to work on any one I've seen. It does work like a charm on the reunion cabs though. As to some other tricks, I too wish I knew that Dragon's Lair trick...would have mastered it at the Showbiz Pizza BITD :D A few other tricks:
:200K trick for shooting 3 birds on Phoenix. Knew about this one, but don't know if I ever successfully pulled it off.
:2 free credits on Crazy Climber: Enter JORDAN.LTD on the high score screen (only works on the Japanese sets, because the US boards only allow 3 initials)
:Crazy Kong: Jumping thru the floor on the barrel board, and also drop the hammer on the conveyor belt (starting at level 2) and it'll keep smashing pies without you holding it. Knew about both of these (I found the hammer one by accident)
:Bubble Bobble: several codes to change the game...give you all powerups, original mode, etc. I knew of the powerups one, but always forgot to take the codes with me to the arcade to try them ;)

I think it was removed in a ROM revision. Only the first wave of original Galaga's have it.

oh heres one for you bump n jump fans if you go through the whole stage without blowing up a car you get a 50,000 bonus. as far as the up up down down nintendo cheat it works on my pc10 which is very cool having young kids that play.

was there ever a game that had a bug that would let you play for free without crediting?
