So I found a garage sale listing on CL. Lady has a Ms Pac Man upright for sale. I contact her to get some information. She tells me she believes its an original midway ms pac man. I ask her to send pictures.

Definitely doesn't look like an original, but being a newb, I have no idea what I'm looking at... just that it's not pretty. Thoughts?

That is definitely some hardcore bootleg artwork. I think that used to be a Centuri cabinet as well. But it is definitely not original.

EDIT: I guess I was wrong after all. Check out mod's post below:

I don't think it's a Centuri cab, the Marquee, and the front of the control panel look too small, and the monitor doesn't seem to be in the right position... Control panel and Marquee look more like a Sega/Gremlin Frogger style, but the monitor is in the wrong position for that cab too...

It actually almost looks like some sort of cabaret cab to me, though it's hard to tell from those pics. Seems like it's not very tall or deep, but maybe that's just the way the pictures look.

Edit: Oops, missed Mod's Pop-Man post. Interesting piece of arcade history there.

I think it's kind of cool actually. When's the last time anyone has seen one of those? Kind of reminds me of a home made multi artwork kit.
Veneer is for cocktails only IMHO lol.

Well, I think the lady sees dollar signs. The price is wrong, bob. She's asking $700. Given that this was a single game in a garage sale listing, I figured it would be worth investigating, explaining what she has, telling her what it's worth, then making her a generous offer.... with haul away service.

I'm kind of scratching my chin at the moment though. It would be really cool if it still had a hacked PCB.

I remember the local arcade had a Pop-Man...never saw the point, as the only difference was Popeye's head instead of Pac-Man. I don't remember what the cab looked like though, and I also believe it had a standard Pac-Man maze, not the 6 tunnel disappearing maze that's in the KLOV description (which is actually from Hangly-Man...a game I did see back in the day)

I'd walk. Without the original PCB, I see the thing as only being worth the Ms. Pac PCB, the marquee, and the monitor bezel.

It's cool, but it's not remotely close to $700 cool. (to me anyway)

I do enjoy checking out the weird stuff that pops up in this hobby though. Every now and then I'll go to see a game for sale and find something that I haven't seen before.

Just don't make her feel dumb... even if something's not worth a lot, and the person thinks it is, she will probably just think you are trying to "lowball" her and get a good deal... see, I used a CL term there

I responded to her and said that I probably wasn't interested given that I was looking for an original Ms. Pac cabinet, then I explained what you guys suspect she has, and told her it was a pretty unique piece. The end. :]

i would almost put money on it that it's actually a converted Orca cabinet. i'm pretty sure my Springer cab is the same though with silver t-molding instead of black.

unfortunately it's buried too far in the back for me to take an easy look at it, but maybe if i get enough crap moved out of the way tomorrow i'll check.

I would buy that to flip it, if I thought I could flip it. When it comes to bootleg art, my favorite is the Willis Ms. Pac side art but I can't find an image of it right now.
