Hey guys... I'm a rookie to this addiction, and I'm still learning a lot, but I see NOS used (as an adjective?) and I'm not sure what it means. I tried running a search to see if anyone else had asked it before, but it was like looking for a needle in a haystack.

So there's my first of most likely many simple questions.

NOS = New Original Stock

New in that it has never been used before, although it could still be 20+ years old.

Probably going to get beaten to this one but NOS stands for New Old Stock. Basically it's parts/pieces/art/whatever that were sent out to ops back in the day and never actually used on a game. If a conversion kit was bought by an op and then they didn't use the sideart, that kind of thing. In theory it should mean untouched but in a lot of cases people tend to slap the label on just about anything old, sometimes even if it's been previously installed in a machine (i.e. joystick, buttons) or if it's caked in rust from rat piss, that kind of thing.

NOS = "New Old Stock".

The phrase should be used to refer to parts (or whatever) that are new, i.e. they have never been used or installed.

This does not necessarily mean pristine condition. NOS parts may be anywhere from "perfect" to "pretty damn bad" condition depending on how they were stored and how durable the parts themselves are over time. Some thing go bad just sitting on a shelf even in ideal storage conditions.

It should also only be used to describe original parts as made by the original manufacturer or supplier. It should never be used to refer to brand new reproduction parts, although some repros are sold as NOS.

If you are watching The Fast and the Furious on DVD, it stands for Nitrous Oxide Systems. NOS!!! :)

Ahh, ok thanks!

What's an arcade game then?

Kidding, kidding... I just restored a Bad Dudes, new controls, pcb, etc. I have an original Rolling Thunder in great shape, an Arkanoid 2 Revenge of Doh (that someone put into a centipede cab with a Arkanoid Tournament marq) that I'm nearly done fixing up... I'm using an old Two Crude cab to make a Tetris (Atari) game. After that, I have a 2 player TMNT pcb that I'm installing in an empty generic sega cab. Then I'm going to be recalibrating the P2 gun on my Operation Thuderbolt... as well as some other projects on the way. I'm also going to sell one of my kidneys illegally for cold hard cash so I can buy Tempest.

I think there should be a sticky with all the acronyms and terms defined...

I'm in a terrible field for not being able to recall acronyms... I'm a programmer... we use them all the time, but I suck with them.

but in arcade's there's a ton too, it seems... and crazy terms

It's an energy drink that gives one the power to fix any game and also makes you an animal in the sack.

Don't fall for the NOS trick unless there aren't repros on the market. Don't know how many times I've overpaid on an auction with "ZOMG NEW OLD STOCK BUY IT ITZ FRUM ATAREE!!!1" in the title only receive it and realize it's just a repro I could have bought half price from a number of other sites. Sorry ePay scammahs, but when I pay NOS prices, I expect NOS, not a crappy quality print out of something you bootlegged off of another arcade site.

In addition to the literal meaning (new old stock), there is also the implication that the item is [unless otherwise explicitly stated]:

• Out of production (else why bother with new old stock if you can just buy new stock?)
• OEM (original equipment manufacturer)
• In "like new" condition

People who ignore those unwritten rules, falling back on the literal definition for justification = "shady" in my book.
