I did a cap kit on my donkey kong. I hooked it all up before I put it back in the cabinet and it all worked fine. I just put it all back in the cabinet and it does not work. There is a funny smell coming from the monitor and its making a strange humming sound. This happens even when I unhook the video to it. It has never done this.

I don't get it. This is very frustrating. Where have I gone wrong?

its an over all problem

Sound and video are all related to the monitor. If it worked before you did the cap kit, you most likely either hooked something up wrong, or made a mistake in your rebuild. Go over your work, and make sure the connectors to the sound card are in the proper spots...

Did you plug the monitor in to a standard outlet at any time or have you always powered it via the plug at the bottom of the DK cabinet?

He said he hooked up everything prior to putting it back in the cab and it worked.

Do you think I should try pulling it back out of the cabinet?

I would remove it. Look over everything and see if anything 'jumps out' at you - burned components, etc. Look for long leads on caps that could have made contact with something.

If you don't see anything then try it outside the cabinet again.

Sure sounds like something happened when installing it back into the cabinet if it was all working outside.

OK i took it out of the cabinet and hooked it all up again. The screen is still funny looking but the monitor is humming but not making the same noise. The sound actually sounds normal now. I cant tell if its still letting off the smell.

I pulled the eproms to see if they were ok. The one in 5c has one of the teeth broken off of it. Would that cause it to go crazy like this?

The pic of the screen loaded sideways for some reason

as far as the rom, you can solder a jumper wire to the rest of the pin and run it to the solder point of that part of the socket on the pcb.

when you took it out of the cab did you see any burnt components on the boards? did you verify the video and sound cables were properly plugged in in the right direction?

You will note the little notch on the chip (on the left in your picture). In most cases, all the notches on your chips will point in the same direction. Yes, if you put it in the opposite direction you will be putting voltage on the wrong pins and can have undesirable effects.

The "goesnintos" and "comesoutofs" (tech school terminology) on the sound board are really easy to reverse. I did that once. Sparks shot out of the cabinet and I suddenly needed a new sound board.
