What did I do to my Out Run?

I've been sitting on this Out Run for a couple years. It boots (booted) to minor graphics glitches. Since it's an Out Run, with a board stack, I figured to take it apart, reseat all the socketed chips, and put it back together. That's generally what's up with these.

Fire it back up, and now I'm getting this black/white out-of-sync (and can't BE sync'd) picture.

It's an Out Run, not Turbo, so it's not a suicide battery issue, right?

You either static killed something that was on its last legs, or more likley you have put a chip back in the wrong way round, or one or more chips has a leg that bent under the chip rather than going back into its slot on the socket. The last is the most likely.

I never removed any of the chips completely; just nudged them up, them pushed them back. So, I doubt it's a leg issue. And, definitely not a backward chip issue.

*sigh* I guess I'll pull it apart again, and look again.

Can you post a picture of the B&W out-of-sync screen?

And, no, I've never seen an OutRun with a suicide battery (although I've read rumors that some did). If you see a big boxy looking thing on the top board, labeled "FD-####", then it's a suicide battery (well, inside the box is). But I highly doubt you'll find it.

Check the monitor connection on the main PCB.....there are TWO connectors can fit it. You might have connected it incorrectly.

Good call, except I had it in the right connector. The one next to audio out, correct?

Connector "H". It's on the bottom board.
"N" (on the top board) is an auxillary audio connector.

Just to be sure that I'm reading correctly, the video out connector is "H"?

I did have it plugged into "N", and that's where I was getting the symptoms as described, above. Plugged into "H" I now get absolutely nothing on screen. :p

Here's a picture to hopefully make is crystal clear...

And the red wire in the connector goes furthest from the corner of the PCB.

Do you know that L is for?

There is no connector "L". The "L" you see in the photo I posted earlier is a label for PCB grid column L (used along with numbers to specify PCB location). The connectors are labeled in inverted text (a solid white screen printed block, with the letter in reverse inside of it). The connector I labeled as "NOT VIDEO :(" is connector "N", and it is for auxillary audio. It is only used in the sit-down models of OutRun. (The basic sit-down just uses them to provide audio out jacks; the deluxe sit-down does that as well as takes the "mix" audio to form a third, center, channel of audio.)

Well, it's still showing nothing on screen. Of course, I haven't poked at it since, but at least it's plugged into the right connector, now.

You might start by plugging the monitor into a known-working game, to make sure it (the monitor) still works fine. Having been plugged into the low-level audio signals should NOT have done any damage, but it's worth making sure.

Very difficult in it's current location. And, it still displays stuff when plugged into the low level audio plug, so it's capable of displaying stuff (even though it's not the correct stuff).

I made the same mistake with my Outrun machine (thats why I suggested it!) I did not damage my monitor by having the connector mixed up. Hopefully you figure out what went wrong!

Yeah, hopefully. I was going for "fixed" and now it's worse than ever. :p
