What are your favorite dungeon crawler/fantasy themed games? GO!

+1 for Black Tiger but it's really kinda hard actually. Maybe I just sucked...

The funny thing is that I never thought of GnG as a dungeon crawler or fantasy even though it sort of is. Ok, now someone is going to bust out with Castlevania....

I sort of think of GnG and Castlevania as Japanese gothic horror... but maybe now I'm just making up my own genre's. They all fit under action adventure which really is the genre but I think of Dungeon Crawlers and Fantasy games one genre and appealing to the DnD playing generation.

Maybe we should reboot the thread and make it just about the "RPG dungeon crawler" game design and less about the "fantasy" art direction (someone is still gonna mention a beat-em up or a light gun game anyways ;P). Even Magic Sword I consider more a platformer than anything close to RPG/Dungeon Crawl related. I just tossed it in for the theme. Same with GnG. Castlevania is "fantasy" as well IMO. The art direction became gothic later in the series.

Yeah, fantasy has many genera.

And, it has even more sources of inspiration.

But, all game types aside, fantasy seems--to me at least--to be a work, of imaginative fiction, involving magic and adventure, esp. in a setting other than the real world (N.O.A.D.).

And, I wish they would have made some hidden passage ways--back doors (or warps)--so you could skip floors--to play a quicker version of the game.

The Tower is 50 stories high!!!!!

They did. They are hidden. You can find them easier with the theif character. Sometimes, you gotta random hit an area on screen for a door to appear. Same with secret chests.

I never keep that guy!

I always ditch 'em first chance I get.

I never cared about the secret chests! I never knew about the secret doors. I may have to play this game again sometime soon--with the THIEF. :D

I always play with the boomerang axe guy, since his projectile gets really helpful after he levels up a little bit. I have found hidden chests with him, but I never realized he was helpful at making those appear.

While I was digging up info on M.S., I found a author that wrote:

Some fans consider MAGIC SWORD to be the spiritual successor to BLACK TIGER.

Was wondering what you all think about this line?

Funny you should bring this up, I was just about to post with a question regarding "spiritual successors".

From everything I've read:

Black Tiger/Dragon and Magic Sword seem to be related. I grew up playing Black Tiger...haven't checked out Magic Sword yet.

Also

The two Capcom D&D titles are of course related.

Question.

King of the Dragons is also made by Capcom. Does it relate to either of these series?

I.E. if you had two jamma switch cabs with the D&D titles in one and Tiger/Sword in the other, would you put King of Dragons in either?

Just curious...and too lazy to go check em all out in MAME right now.

I've always thought of Magic Sword as a follow up to Black Tiger, but have played a lot more BT over the years (one of the few games I can beat on one quarter).

Black Tiger > Magic Sword.

And wouldn't Warlords be considered a fantasy themed game?

I think so too, they call the money in both games 'Zenny coins', and it's the same company. Close enough for me to consider it a sequel, of sorts.

Golden Axe, the Revenge of Death Adder is my favorite, though the Gauntlet Legends and Dark Legacy are awfully cool -- I just never got onto the computer-polygon graphics on them, for me the only letdown. Gimme traditional animation any day.

Gate of Doom is really cool, but the voice-acting is laughable -- but still a great game. Like Gauntlet meets D&D.

I got an Astyanax PCB recently, it is pretty cool. Reminds me of a 2-player Rastan.

Rastan is great, of course.

Rastan Saga 2 (Nastar Warrior) is not as bad as everyone says. I built a cab and played it all the way through twice, it is pretty fun once you get the hang of the stiff controls. Cool music, sort if like the original Conan movie score. The game would have been a great game had it come out BEFORE Rastan.

Dark Adventure, Gauntlet, AD&D Games, Golden Axe, Magic Sword were my favs.

No love for Dark Adventure from anyone else huh? Game was damn hard...

http://www.arcade-museum.com/game_detail.php?game_id=7517

It was a pretty rare game - why people probably never listed it.

I love the game! It reminded of Gauntlet w/ a Gradius type of weapon select. I heard this mentioned as being a *hard/difficult game*. I never really thought so, but I do remember getting lost a lot! What pissed me off was the fact you lost energy just by walking around ala Gauntlet - maybe OP adjustable?

I've only seen conversions out there bitd. So, I'm not convinced there was a
dedicated version - prove me wrong...

I've got the boardset and marquee for one. And have a bastardized Boot Camp cab for a donor cab - just need the cpo and sideart....

I believe there was a dedicated cabinet. I remember seeing it in an arcade in at the Florida mall in the late 80's. I used to have a PCB and dedicated three player control panel for it, that had the map button, but I sold them. I also saw it as a two player conversion in the Super Contra style white cabinet. The game was hard because you lost energy by walking and it was easy to get lost as there were so many possible exits to different levels and only one correct way to go to get to the end.
