I may be picking up a Neo Geo cabinet (single slot unfortunately). I've been looking at a few of the games on youtube and I can already tell Metal Slug is a must have. What other games are noteworthy for a Neo Geo?

My favs are the King of Fighters series, Metal Slug, Nightmare, Puzzle Bobble, Puzzle De Pon, etc.

Also, get a 120 in 1 cart, that way you can try out a bunch of games all at once.

....

Metal Slug series, 1945 Plus, Samurai Showdown series, Zupapa!, Pulsar, Blazing Star, Nightmare in the Dark, Bustamove/Puzzle Bubble. Oh and the Irritating Maze...

There are so many games it's really just a matter of personal preference. Metal Slug is pretty much a must have for any Neo Geo cab, I would probably pick Metal Slug 3 if I could only choose one.

Samurai Shodown and King of Fighters are probably the most popular fighting games for the Neo.

metal slug, neo turfmasters, super sidekicks, sam show, blazing star, KoF, puzzle bobble, baseball stars 2. all great games and that line up has a nice mix for everyone

Metal Slug 3
KOF 2002 or 98 (I like 99 too!)
Some people like Last Resort (I don't).
Magical Drop 3
Mark of the Wolves (Best Fighter on the system)

I would add Super Spy to the list of games already mentioned. You should get a 120-1. It comes with a lot of the games already mentioned.

If you do get a multi cart like John suggested, make sure you are running a newer PCB or you may run into reset issues. I went thru a 48-1 and a 108-1 before I realized there are compatibility issues with the multi carts. Running a newer 1-slot now with a 108-1 and running smooth now.

The only unfortunate thing about the multi's is most of the games are fighters, and most of those are the KOF series (pretty lame IMO). There are lots of other awesome games though that merit the price tag. Metal Slug 3 and Puzzle Bobble are must haves. I also like most of the sports games (Baseball Stars 2, Neo Turf Masters ect...), Blazing Star, Neo Drift Out and Overtop are a few more that I play alot. I only wish I had League Bowling and KOTM. Oh well.

Best I know of,
Shootemups: Blazing Star, Pulstar, Alpha Mission II, Last Resort, Zed Blade

Fighters: Art of Fighting I-III, Samurai Showdown 3-5special, KOF 2000+, SNK vrs
Capcom, Last Blade 1&2

Puzzle games: Bust a move I and II, Nightmare in the Dark, Ghostlop

Action/other: Metal Slug (any), Windjammers, Crossed Swords, Magician Lord, Sengoku 1-3, Neo Bomberman, Eightman, King of Monsters 1&2

I have to agree with most of what has been listed here. I personally like some of the "first generation" Neo Geo games such as 'Nam 1975, Ninja Combat and Magician Lord. Primarily because when they first came out, the hardware seemed to be so much better than a lot of other games at the time. The art style was unique, and the stereo sound with voices was pretty high tech for the time (1989) as well. Back when it first came out, I DESPERATELY wanted the home console. That was the first time that you could EVER play the EXACT same games as in the arcade on your TV at home.

Speaking of the Stereo sound, if you are using a single slot in Mono, you are missing out. Some of the games have a pseudo 3 dimensional sound to them when played in stereo mode with a couple of decent speakers...

If you're going with a single slot you should definitely pick up the 138-1, as its perfect for the jamma wired 1-slot. I just brought home my first Neo and I love it. It has the distinguished record of being the only game my wife enjoys (thanks Puzzle Bobble!)

Some must haves if you're going to buy the individual carts:
Puzzle Bobble
Metal Slug (any of 'em, its the reason to own a Neo in my opinion)
Neo Turfmasters
Last Resort
Zupapa!

Congrats on the incoming Neo...have fun!

All neo games run perfectly on MAME so at the very least you can check them out on MAME and then get carts for the ones you like.

Pretty much in line with the other replies....Any sam sho, Metal slug....League Bowling is good and if you can find it Super Dodge Ball...
