Well i fucked up big! i decided to start my Space Duel restore and i accidentally broke the neck on my WG 6100 vector monitor in the process!

I'm in search of a WG6100 donor tube.

What specs should i keep in mind?

Any TV brands and models that people successfully tube swapped?

OMG, heartbreaking:( I hope someone can tell you something, this seems to be somewhat of a mystery as far as donor tvs....hopefully someone will know and post something.

Yeah, unfortunately you have broken one of the most difficult-to-replace tubes there is. Although they can be found in old TVs it is like finding a needle in a haystack. You break a tube in a raster monitor and you have a number of options for a new tube on craigslist or at the thrift store, but the 6100 uses a 100 degree tube which was very uncommon in old TVs. I've opened up probably 40 TVs for tubes and never found a 100 degree tube.

Your best bet is to find another 6100 (which is itself tough to find) or take a tube from a G08 from a Sega vector, which used the same tube but is even tougher to find. They are out there, but it probably won't be cheap! A tube recently sold on ebay, but keep in mind this is for an untested tube with some burn.

Damn! After i stopped kicking my self about it i got on google and searched through and through for a glimmer of hope and i did! Not sure if its legit but hey its something. The website states

"I finally found a source for replacement vector monitor tubes! And they have no minimum order and will do business with individuals!! The company is Richardson Electronics, LTD. and the phone number is 800-222-2787. Their Web Pages are at*http://www.rell.com
19VARP4 (B&W vector), Phillips M47EAA7WS tube will be sent. Price is $115 each.*
19VLUP22 (color vector), National Electronics brand, $165 each."

I sure do hope this is true. Do any of you know about them?

I have heard of that source before, but I think all who have tried them have found they don't have any more of the 19VLUP22s and haven't for a long time so I think that is very old information. I do think you can still get the B&W vector tubes new, but as far as I know that source of new color tubes is long since dried up.

I know this is horrible but for the time being until i find a good tube.

Is it possible to put an LCD in there?

Anything is possible but it's not practical. You would have to find a 4:3 LCD (which are tough to locate these days, everything is widescreen) but the big hurdle is converting the XY output from the game into a VGA signal that the monitor can display. I don't know if there is a currently-made plug and play option for this, and the only one I know of is a product nobody makes anymore (VectorVGA) and they are very pricey... plus you still run into the fact that it won't look nearly as good as an actual vector monitor.

If you have $600 to spend on this, you will have no shortage of people willing to sell you a 6100 for that price!

I think before I stuck an LCD in there I would just swap in an easily found 90 degree tube and live with the pincushioning (or barreling - I forget which way it would go in this case, probably barreling) for now until you can find a 100 degree tube. You might even be able to use one of Clay's pincushion correctors adapted to a tempest board to correct for the 90 degree tube. I have thought about it, but never tried it...

In some cases the extra inch or so the tube sticks out may be a problem for the back door- but it depends on the game. I guess you could bolt the crt to the front of the frame with spacers to correct this.

In theory the 100 degree yoke should slide down far enough on the 90 degree tube to work, but I have not personally tried it. Maybe someone that has can chime in.

You may want to check with Video Display Corp (VDC). They're not rebuilding these anymore but they may still have some old stock. I bought a few 9" amber's from them a couple years ago for a batch of Super 6 dart boards I was restoring.

I have had to use a 90 degree TV tube on my WG6100 monitor

You have to try and use spacer washers to mount the tube further forward (See post 14 in the link below)

Then the HV box will still touch the angled part of the tube, so fit something there like dense cardboard to prevent any wearing there

Then you have to slide the Plastic mold off the TV and fit the mold from the WG6100 necked tube

Here's the thread

Hey Dezbaz,

Would i just need to drop 90 degree tube in and add the yoke from 6100 as well as changing the mold from the 90 degree tubes neck? Or is it not that simple?

Try getting the mold from the busted tube first (For Practice)

That will give you an idea of what's involved there

Then remove the busted tube from the frame

Then remove the mold from the TV tube (Be very very VERY careful)

The necks have NO Strength, use a sharp knife, and cut the glue and prise the mold evenly

Once the tube has the mold in a removable state, fit the mold back on till the new tube's fitted to prevent damage

Mount the ears of the tube on the front of the brackets, and use 1/8" worth of 1/4" Washers to get better clearance at the back

Space Duel should not be a problem, Tempest is worse I hear (For clearance)
