I'm not sure if this is a monitor issue or not but I suspect it is.

I just bought my first Star Wars cabinet--in pretty decent shape. However, the Wells 6100 in it looks pretty much stock... well there is a suspicious fan mounted in it but otherwise the chassis looks like it has not been capped or anything.

Here's the issue:

The game fires up fine. Nice and bright. But within about an hour, the graphics and text start to pinch in and eventually nothing is drawn correctly on the screen.

Turn it off, let it sit for 30 minutes or so and turn back on... the game runs fine again for about 30-45 minutes. Then the same problem.

Anyone know what that could be? Is it the monitor or the power supply possibly?

I just repaired a Star Trek (I know--vastly different machine EHG08, etc) by replacing a bad power supply. That monitor didn't pinch in though it would just flicker and go dark. It was having a problem with the voltage. Once the new PS was put in the machine that Star Trek has been rock solid. (Knock on Wood--or pressboard.)

So, I've been reading about the 6100 and it looks like this machine originally shipped with an Amplifone monitor.

So my next question is... Is the 6100 fully compatible with the SW Board set?

monitor issue

i had the exact same problem with my gravitar,. went round and round with the power supply,ar11,rebuilt the monitor, still same problem. mine turned out to be a bad avg ic on the board. swapped it out,and and works perfect now.dont know if a star wars board is the same? i assume so?

Any chance you have the model number of the IC so I can compare?

--Researched--

Is the part you replaced: part number 137179-001? If so then the Star Wars board indeed has it.

Looks like you can possibly order a kit to replace that chip: http://www.retroclinic.com/leopardcats/gatearray/gatearray.htm or http://www.elektronforge.com/order.htm are two sources.

Also here: http://www.arcadeshop.com/parts.htm I've purchased lots from this place and they seem reliable.

I'm gonna give it a shot. Thanks for the reply. It would be a helluva lot easier than capping and replacing resistors and such. Cheap fix too. I'll let you know how it turns out.

Well I went for the one from Arcade shop. SUPER easy to install. (Though I did have to bend a post down to make it fit.)

I installed it about an hour ago and no glitches thus far. This is looking very very good.

I'll post a follow up after I've run the machine through the paces for a day or two.

To answer your other question. No the 6100 is not 100% compatible with Star Wars.

The Amplifone setup had the pincushion correction built on the board, where as the 6100 does not.

What that means is you will have pincushion problems on your Star Wars using a 6100.

There are rumors of a Pincushion correction circuit adapter that will allow you to correct the pincushion but nothing as of yet.

The display will be fine other than the pincushion, most times you won't notice it unless you are in test mode.

Aww crap.

Thanks to both of you.

Turns out that my problem runs deeper than a simple AVG replacement. Gonna probably have to move this thread into the general maintenance section for arcade games.

Here's a photo of the original problem:

The problem returned again yesterday. And now it's even worse because Tie Fighters stopped being displayed on the screen and the sounds for them as well.

I know this is a late posting, but I wanted to clean house and lay this thread to rest in case someone stumbles across it on the google:

The problem shown above is NOT a WG6100 monitor problem. It is a problem with the Star Wars board set. A replacement set fixed this issue.
