I have a couple spare WG6102 X,Y monitors.
I decided to test them out last night by plugging them into my working Tempest.

Monitor #1 had some bad burn, but looked great. Even better than the one in the Tempest (that one gets jittery at times)

Monitor 2" looked OK, was maybe a bit blurry, but the screen was about 140% the size it should be. On the title screen where it should say "TEMPEST" it was more like "EMPES"

Will new caps fix this? Or is it something more serious?

Feel free to comment on the sometimes jittery WG 6101 in the Tempest too if you like :)

Thanks!

Monitor #1: Jits could be bad small signal transitors or even more likely a solder joint, trace or wire that is opening intermittently.

Monitor #2: Likely due to high voltage regulation in your high voltage cage. could be a # of things in there to cause lack of regulation.. possible small signal transitors mpsa06's that are corrupt. caps would be a good start.

Thanks Chad,

I have a cap kit on the way from Bob, I figured that should be my first course of action. I will update the thread after I install it.

I really like that monitor because the burn is very, very faint. Almost impossible to see.

Anyone know if I can swap boards (LV section, HV section) between 6101 and 6102?

To update this thread...
I installed one of bob's cap kits on the 6100 with the least amount of burn. Reflowed all pins, checked traces, etc...This was the monitor that used to show everything really big. "empes" instead of "Tempest".

I had a little snag with the HV unit being dead after I installed the new parts. Figuring I may have screwed something up, I swapped all the new parts to another HV unit, that worked.

So now I had a working 6100 with Bob's cap kit in it. Things were good and I used the test screens on the game to dial everything in. I set the HV to 180v using pin 5 on the HV connector, got the colors balanced, the pots on the gameboard adjusted etc..

One thing that seemed weird was the brightness of the vectors, the more lines on the screen, the dimmer they seemed to be. Screens that were mostly black, looked great, and busier screens were dimmer and less stable. I also noticed that the monitor made more audible noise in the busier screens.

So fast fwd to tonight, I move the game inside, turn it on, and I have a blank screen. If I turn up the screen control on the flyback I can see green vector traces and thats it. Well the traces and the spot in the middle.

Other things done:
Rebuilt ARII board.
adjusted to 5V at main board.
New big blue in brick.

Things not done to 6100:
Flyback
chassis mounted transistors

Any ideas? I have another monitor that I can use for testing purposes.

OK.

The monitor stopped working because the white and blue wire had gotten knocked off the deflection board. I must have been clumsy moving the monitor into or out of the game.

In summary: Bob's cap kit fixed the 9100 that was displaying everything REALLY BIG:)
