Hey guys - I need some guidance. I recapped my WG6100 with Bob Robert's repair kit. The image looks pretty good but I'm getting some weird episodes where the it goes out of focus. I never encountered this. It specifically happens during high intense scenes. For example, when the Death Star blows up the images seems to expand and become a little out of focus. As soon as the scene is over it goes back to normal and looks fine.

Has anyone encountered this?

Thanks in advance.

6100 monitor will do this in Star Wars! That death star explosion really puts a strain on the HV cage so if it's not 100% the picture will bloom and go out of focus.. you remember this game was designed for amplifone monitors !! Not sure if/how to beef up HV cage to handle this..

The anomalies can be reduced if ->

1. reduce the brightness
2. keep the display length/width away from the edges of the screen

YMMV

What's strange is that I owned another Star Wars with a 6100 and never noticed this issue.

The monitor tube is not mounted like it was originally. It's on a piece of plywood. As a result I had to put the PCB cage under the plywood so it would reach. Would this make a difference or cause the issues I am facing?

I'm adding a pic for reference.

those boards being there wouldn't effect the monitor as your describing.

Its a voltage regulation problem. The power supply section of the 6100 cant keep up with the demand as the DS explodes.

Perhaps your other monitor had:

1. An LV2000 or LV6100? I would think that they would do a better job of keeping the +/- rails at their intended voltage.

2. A cover on the HVU. I cant tell from your pic, is the cover missing from the high voltage cage?

Yes the cage is missing. I do have an extra cage I could use. I will try that.

I will also see about installing an LV2000.

Thanks for your input.

Not sure if either will help and some would argue "if it aint broke dont fix it" in regards to the LV2000.

YMMV.

So, a quick update. I decided to add the HV cage from the other chassis I had to see if that would help with the focus issue. It did not like it one bit. haha Now, the image is completely out of focus. I tried dialing it back in from the flyback controls but no luck. Now, it's out of focus and the dial on the flyback has no impact. Only the brightness works. So, I'm starting to think this is a flyback issue. I'm sending this in to Komodo to see if he can help. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Komodo you're my only hope.....

that second cage having no effect via the focus pot could be the focus block or a bad connection.

Update: Looks like the issue has been solved. This "out of focus" issue was all being caused by the focus wire from inside the cage off the back of the flyback. It was loose. As soon as I touched it, it came off. Thanks for Komodo (and everyone here) for the advice. You guys have been so helpful. I really appreciate all your help. Now, to play some Star Wars.

Hey Eddie, if you ever get tired of that Star Wars... ;)

Happens easily. I pull back the rubber boot and pinch the pin closed with pliers. Then it will be held on a lot better when you plug it back in.

The monitor picture looks good and now I'm having issues with the switches. I tried two different PCBs to make sure that was not causing the issue. Same thing with both. Only one cherry switch is registering. The other 3 are not functioning. I tried different new switches but no luck. I thought maybe the wiring was wrong but I confirmed and it's right. Anyone have idea what could cause the switches not to work?
