Wg6100 hv cage trivia.... Test your skills.

Weird recap.

C901 and C902 should be identical, but it looks like someone replaced one cap and not the other. I'll bet C902 (the smaller purple one) is original.

C905 should be an axial cap, but it, too, has been replaced.

The cap by the transformer should be radial, not axial, so it's been replaced.

I've recently recapped four HV units, and on three out of the four, (one of which had been recapped), C901/C902 were all well out of spec. Given the heat in the cage, and the number of caps that were out of spec, I replaced every cap with newly-ordered 105C-rated caps wherever possible, and with newly-ordered 85C-rated caps where I couldn't.

The thing that prompted the rebuild was a little bit of jitter on one of my games that didn't go away with a spare (known good) deflection board.

The good news is that given the state of the caps (and the caps that I saw subbed in for C905), there's a pretty wide range of tolerances in there.

The bad news is that if you haven't recapped your HV unit in the past 10 years, odds are it's got at least one cap (and probably more than one cap) that's on the verge of failure.

if i remember correctly the last service date reads 1985.. I am flat broke thx to a recent $800 plumbing repair that came shortly after a $3500 roof repair, but when i can get the funds i will attempt the full Bob Roberts rebuild. :(

Save up your money then, at least you've had a taste of Tempest...and that's all it takes :)
