I recently picked up a Tempest and when I got it, all of the harnesses were unplugged, including all of the monitor boards. I've never worked on a 6100, so I'm not familiar with the connections. What I have is two wires (red and white) coming from the neck board, and two wires (red and black, smaller gauge that the neck board wires) coming from the focus block. From what I can tell, these wires should be connected, I'm assuming red to red and white to black? The keyed connector has been removed from both ends, so I'm unable to tell. Can I just install a new 2 position molex on these wires?

I'm trying to get everything plugged back in so that I can see if anything works. I'm sure the monitor will be dead - there's a few burnt components on the hv board, and the flyback looks like it was "melted" at some point!?

Thanks again Dez, it worked! I am pleasantly surprized that the monitor works - I get the test patterns, but the game won't play (obviously a board issue). The vectors are a bit "jittery", but just the fact that it works at all has me stoked. I guess it's time to start a thread in the general repair section...

I have had problems with WG6100s monitor jitter and it has never been because I didn't have the cover on the high voltage unit. Most times you need to tighten connector pins and make sure that you don't have cold solder where pins go thru the PCB. You can also get AC ripple coming out of your power supply on a DC line.

also make sure the DAG spring is stiil there, grounding the tube to the chassis. (the spring running accross the bottom of the picture tube soldered to the grey wire, screwed the lower frame of the monitor)

....and finally, the jitters on the Tempest screen is almost always (after trying everything else).....TADA ! the pots on the main board for adjustment of the image size etc. (Vector output section) Tapping on them while the game is on may illustrate that fact. I have my tech replace every pot on every board I sell just for that reason. Cheap ass pots on those boards, plus they've usually been mangled and manhandled over the years.
