WG6100 blows F100 & F101 on powerup

Finally found all the blown components on this board, and the monitor now fires up without blowing any fuses.

Here is the new problem. I have never seen a monitor do this...

Recap...

Here's what's been done prior to the problems described in this thread:

  • Capkit + extra parts
  • LV2000
  • New big blue
  • Reflowed all header pins on all connectors
Here's what's been replaced recently:

  • Q603/703/604/704 - All new CENU07/57s
  • Q600-602 - TPS98
  • D602 - Blown, replaced with 1N4007
  • D600/601 - 1N914B
  • Replaced all frame-mounted transistors and the transistor mounts
B+ adjusted to 180v. I get +/-26v off the LV board as I should. I checked the X and Y outputs coming off the board and I get scrolling voltages as expected.

One thing I omitted to show in my video is the spot killer. The spot killer flickers, seemingly in sync with the amount of information drawn on the screen. Most of the time it's off, but will slowly glow brighter, and eventually turn on all the way depending on what's being drawn. I see this during the title screen which draws "Tempest" (I have memorized the chatter patterns). I can update the video if someone think it will be helpful to show.

Speaking of which, the chatter on this monitor is pretty loud, but it has always been like that. Just wondering if this is normal or not. Just wondered if some 6100s are just like that, or what.

Have any of you vectorheads out there seen this before?

See no mention of re-flowing header pins.
Does moving the video cable around change anything?
Those are infamous for having the molex connector pins come loose causing shoddy connections.

What does the OP menu say? Any mathbox errors?

I reflowed all header pins when I did the original cap kit. I've done them a couple more times since then. They are 100% good - inspected with a loupe and tested for continuity.

Moving cables around doesn't have any effect.

I currently have no picture, so I can't see the OP menu.....

Check the socket on the nexboard for bent or broken pins.

Do you happen to have another boardset you can use to narrow down which board is the issue?

Looks like vertical hold to me... oh wait, it's a vector :D . That's definitely an odd problem... the Y is drawing off the side of the screen, then shifts to the other side... and back and forth. Have you checked the output from the board with an oscilloscope? It looks like there's a shifting DC bias on the Y line, either from the board output, or in the amplification on the monitor.

If you don't have an oscilloscope, something like that should be obvious even with a multimeter... just ground the black probe and put the red probe on the Y output and measure DC volts. If the board is outputting it, you should see the DC voltage change as the image shifts up and down on the monitor. You could do the same with the output to the Y yoke, though I don't think there's any question whether there's DC at the yoke, since the image is moving like that.

I haven't read the entire thread, but do you know whether the board is supposed to be fully working?

Finally got some time to check this again. Just because I'm thinking this might be a board problem now, I checked the connector between the mainboard and the aux board. I resoldered all pins, even though they seemed pretty good - no cold solder that I could see under a loupe. Also reseated all the socketed chips on the aux board, and cleaned all the edge connectors, which look great.

Mod, I checked the pins on the neck connector, and everything is in perfect shape - no bent pins, continuity, etc.

DogP, once again I checked DC on the Y output and it is scrolling. In tune with the amount of chatter, it goes as low as -1.6v to around +4v.

My Tempest has been in storage for a long time, and I'm just getting around to fixing everything up as I slowly make all repairs and finish my arcade. The game was working 100% before the LV section of the 6100 deflection board blew up years ago.

Any suggestions? Any local Michigan Klovers I can test my Tempest board in? That would at least nail down the section where the problem is.

Well, I am closing out this repair post as I've confirmed that this damn monitor is FIXED! I tested another working color vector game on this monitor and it works great.

Thanks to all who helped. It ended up being the last few things I replaced that were the culprit. I replaced all of the heatsink mounted transistors with Central Semiconductor parts. Q603/703/604/704 => CENU07/57. I also replaced the transistor mounts for the bottlecap transistors on the frame. They were creating continuity problems that created a domino effect of other issues.

I also confirmed that the Tempest problem I'm now having is actually a board issue, and I guess I'll start a new thread for that.

Thanks again...

Scott

Congrats on getting fixed!

Super old thread bump, but thanks to the original posters in this thread - I had an issue with my deflection board blowing F600 as well ... I checked my heatsink mounted transistors, and it turned out Q603 was bad. I replaced it, and it fired right up (without blowing the fuse). Just a bit of good info to bump along.

Glad the thread could help someone else get a 6100 going.

There is a ton of good info on here. I am having the same kind of issues. Bought a non working tempest cabaret. Game plays blind. I installed the get well kit. Re built the lv section ( ordered a lv 2000, waiting for that before I pull the monitor again) . Changed all of the frame mounted transistors. F100 and f101 keep blowing. Haven't touched the edge connector yet. Could that be the cause? The spot killer led comes on for a few seconds then goes off. Getting neck glow but have not had any picture or the spot killer yet. I'm pretty new to these. I've worked on a few star wars, but this is hard to figure out with my limited knowledge on the subject. I am also in michigan

Re-flow all of the header pins if you have not. They are notorious for cold solder joints. Put in the LV2000 when you get it and then see where you are.

I haven't done anything on the edge connector yet.
Lv2000 will hopefully be here tomorrow. I suspect D100-D103 are probably bad. I ordered the rebuild kit from I am Kellogg. I can start the edge connector while I am waiting. Thanks.

Mcc313... hmm motor city c_____ in 313 area code, Detroit!

BAM! you really should put a location in on your profile here sir! :)

Lv 2000 came today. D101 was bad and D102 was broken in half . I will probably just replace all 4. Going to work on these and see what happens.
