I have an original Asteroids with a strange monitor problem. Game plays fine and displays perfect on my scope. The picture on the monitor is HUGE and the center portion is completely black. HV diode is good and monitor has been re-capped. Wondering if my yoke has bit the dust or if I am missing something. Re-soldered header pins, and checked for other cold/cracked solder joints. No spot killer, I do have the normal vector sounds. Just lost. These monitor problems stump me, I'm not giving up yet!

If I recall correctly, there is a transistor in the HV cage that can cause this.

And has your HV diode been replaced or is it just "good"? I had one recently that measured good, but wasn't. It also had some connection issues with the spring inside the insulators. I ended up direct soldering it to the replacement HV diode and it fixed my problem...

The HV diode has not been replaced, but springs are good. The diode tests ok, but it may not hurt to replace it anyway. Any idea which transistor could be causing this? Glad I asked I would have probably ended up replacing the deflection board only to find that my problem still existed. Thanks for the info, and let me know if you have any other info.
