In additional to a standard Bob Roberts V2000 cap kit, any recommendations on upgrades? The monitor is currently running but after a few hours will "bloom" to about 2x the size... after of which when I turn it off for a few minutes it will go back to normal size...

I can tell you I just replaced the high voltage diode in my Omega Race - it was blooming too - and it didn't help. This was AFTER I had already completed a complete rebuild of the entire deflection board and high voltage board.

So I swapped in another V2000 deflection board from my Asteroids Deluxe and the problem has never re-occurred, even after burn testing for 36 hours. Weird.

The other board works perfectly in my AD too.

One recommendation I'd make is to remove the big sand resistors at R101 and R100 on the deflection board. Just jumper the connections with heavy gauge wire. That's a tried and tested mod that's recommended in the vector FAQ.

I've only seen the "bloom" once thus far. It was after about 3-4 hours of operation... it was working fine, i walked away, came back 10 minutes later and the center score section was about double the size and blurryish...

I immediately turned the machine off. I waited about 5 minutes and fired it back up. It worked fine for another 45 minutes to an hour or so when i turned it off. I've since run it about another 4-5 hours ... though only in 1-2 hour intervals... and it's not happened since?!

Other issues I notice but may be PCB related rather than monitor:

During the HS entry screen, everything gets all wavy side-to-side over on the "END" side... the vectors seem to have a "blink" to them.... not as silky-smooth as, for example, Asteroids or Asteroids Deluxe... more on par with Star Castle.. and there is a slight. Overall it looks pretty good frankly for not having been capped recently. I figured for a few bucks I might as well re-cap it and go from there.

Of course I have every cap handy EXCEPT the 22uf 250v one...

>argh<

I'm guessing ole Radio Shack isn't gunna have one.

Not likely. But if you have an old junk TV chassis lying around, you should be able to find a 22uf cap in there.

Uh, then I'm replacing and old cap with an old cap which is sort of defeating the purpose. I may as well just leave the current old cap in there.

:D

Anyone know what the 22uf cap is for and whether leaving that bad boy in there (since the monitor IS working) is gunna be any big issue?

Any alternatives to a 22uf 250v cap (other than a higher voltage cap of course).

Doesn't hurt to try. Only your time is spent. If you replace it with another used cap and the monitor's symptoms go away, then you're done.

Worst case scenario, you change every other cap with a new one and this one with a used one, and the problem remains. Then you just wait until you can get your hands on a 22uf cap.

I'm impatient, so I'd change it with a spare. But then again, I meter all my reclaimed caps to ensure they're still good before I throw them in the parts box....
