I have a WG U5000 that is dead. I have checked the power supply section, and it is working good. Also I have installed a cap kit still no luck. I saw on another web site, that Wells Gardner offers an update kit to help with this problem. Does anyone know exactly what the kits contents are? I am placing an order with Mouser soon, and would like to include these items with my order. Thanks for any info.

Wells makes a couple of different kits for this chassis. First is the power supply update, but you state your supply is working? Next would be the vert sweep kit, but a dead vert circuit usually does not kill the whole monitor, instead will usually give you a line across the middle.

I've seen issues with the horizontal section on these (HOT and supporting components), and had several "only ever seen it once" failures as well (startup supply, etc..).

If you can narrow your fault down to a section of the chassis, it would be a little easier to suggest a kit or parts.

These "service kits" are for the U5000:

# S04E0000-000F Power Suppy upgrade kit, U2000/U5000

# S05F0000-000F Vertical Sweep Upgrade, U2000/U5000 ($15)

# S01J0000-000F Horizontal Output update, U5000 only ($30)

Can be ordered direct from Wells-Gardner. Note: When I tried to order via the website, I kept getting "cart is empty" errors. I telephoned the order in (1-800-336-6630) and ordered everything just fine that way.

Also, if the vertical output chip goes open you'll just have a line across the screen. If it shorts, the power supply will shut down and the monitor will appear dead.

The vertical sweep kit has a custom terminal strip assembly in it with several parts, a wiring harness and connector attached. It would be a hassle to fabricate this assembly on your own from Mouser parts.

Here are the instructions for the upgrade needed if you are getting a blown HOT, especially if you replace it during a rebuild and it blows again after a few minutes...

Thanks guys for the info.
I think I'll order the update kit(s) for W.G. and go from there. This is one of those projects that has been sitting on the shelf for a little while. I Capped it about 6-8 months ago (it was dead when I got it). Than I did the light bulb wired into the output side of the PS and all checked out good (rest of monitor dead as a door nail). That is where I left off until I saw that there was a kit that may help with the many U5000 problems.
I will repost in a week or so with the results.
Happy Gaming
