When I increase the contrast, the picture gets blurry, and i can't seem to adjust it... I can get the monitor to look decent, but its still a little dark.

Is this a flyback issue?

it could be the tube. like this generation of WG stuff shipped with pretty poor tubes. though if you have an inability to get it to focus, chances are it could be the flyback on the way out... at least that's what I've seen on them in the past.

verify first that the focus wire's in all the way in the neck socket, could be something dumb like that. are any of the primary colors weak? I've seen red and green crap out the most frequently, sometimes even with an overpowering tint.

I don't think your dark picture problem is attributed to the flyback so much as it could just be the tube may need a rejuve.

if by chance you don't have access to a rejuvenator, I have heard of people pulling their monitors and laying them screen flat on a thick cushy blanket (so you don't chip or scratch the tube) and tapping on the glass neck with like a screwdriver. you don't wanna go berzerker behemoth style on this cause it is made of glass, but if done right, it should knock some shit off the guns and improve the picture some... that is of course if that actually works.

if the flyback is original though, and exhibits anything like the Screen or Focus CHANGING on their own during operation, then it's time for a new flyback. you'll especially know if the edges of the picture don't ever seem to focus properly.

There are some resistors and capacitors that can cause issues with brightness and contrast. Check here for the most common:

I seriously doubt it is the flyback. I've seen this before, and swapping flybacks didn't help.

The last time this happened, it turned out that the Contrast pot was cracked, keeping the value always high. When I turned up the brightness, the contrast went wacko...

I'll have to check this out. I got a tube that to my understanding saw minimal use and I can't get the contrast to ever look right on it without smearing. and oh yeah mod.. it's our favorite U5000. ;) think that can be affected by the same stuff? I have probably 4 parts chassis I can pull from.

try changing the neck board....if the U500 IC goes bad...it can cause a poor picture quality.
