I was wondering what the deal is what the capacitor C729 on the 7400... Its 10uf50volts bi-polarized high frequency.. Usually I get cap kits from twisted quarter and they come with a nichicon HF series bi-polarized cap. This time around I wanted to order my own list of caps from mouser and I had problems finding a cap that would work.. I asked bob roberts and he told me that noone makes this cap anymore.... So my questions are:

1. does anyone know a manufacturer that still makes this cap? I think bob has some for sale but I'd love to know where to get them if he runs out....

2. Does anyone know how big a deal it would be to replace that cap with a high temp bi-polarized cap that wasn't high frequency?

Thanks

you can't use the same size caps if you tie them together for a bi polar cap. I believe you have to double the microfarads to use them that way.

That is correct. You would need 2 x 22uf caps and it would give you 11uf. But it still will not have the high frequency rating.

Here is a picture of 2 x 10uf to give a value of 5uf.

I posted the link for him with the high frequency caps. Idk like I said I never used the method but the guy said he used this method for years. Can your little thingamajigger test non polar caps? Your meter is showing 4.7 uf

Yes it will test all types of caps, diodes, transistors, inductors and resistors. Here is another picture with 2 x22uf caps in series for a UF value of 10.43 (caps have 20% tol.). First picture was 2 x 10uf caps.

I've left a comment on his video. Waiting to see if he left out some information on this. Btw pretty close to Washington.

Thats the EP series. That cap is bi-polarized but not low impedance at high frequency range... The only two series that are low impedance and high freq range are HD and HV .. But neither of those series are bi polarized.

For bi-polar (and if you're going with Nichicon), you need the HA series
part# UHA1H100KHD
Here's a Xicon one #BPHR50V10
Both of these are out of stock at Mouser....

MCM Electronics has their "house" brand in stock. I've used them....they seem good. They're rated at 125 degrees!

This one's rated at 100 volts....they're also out of the 50 volt.

Nichicon doesn't have the HA series on their website.. They probably don't make them anymore.

Yeah, they've been discontinued......and I'm unsure if Xicon is still around/has USA distribution, but I'd bet there's still some suppliers with inventory on their shelf. Part numbers will make that hunt a bit easier.

At this point I think I'm just going to say screw it and use the EP series in the future. I accidently put in a 10uf50volt polarized non high freq cap in that spot once and it seemed to work fine...

Actually.. twistedquarter.com referred me to Zanen Electronics. I was able to order a handful of the proper caps. He bought out as many as he could when they went discontinued. woot.
