Well, I sure am mad. Let me start off with a bit of background. I picked up a working Assault cab about a month ago with a pretty bad looking monitor. Luckily, all I had to do was adjust some pots. After a few minutes, it looked almost like new. There was barely any fuzzyness at all; the image was nice and sharp.

Well, over the past month, it has started slowly getting fuzzy again. I have the pot on the flyback turned all the way up, but it still looks quite blurry. It has been getting worse every day. Each time I turn the game on, the video quality seems to get worse bit by bit.

So, I guess my question is this: What is causing this? Surely the caps wouldn't fail so quickly. Or would they? Is something else the issue? Is there an easy fix?

Well, I guess that was more than one question. But I'm an electronic newb and just want my Assault looking nice again.

Sounds like it's time for a good ole fashioned capkit and/or the flyback is going south.
If it has the flyback with the white adjustment knobs those are infamously crap so spend the money for a new flyback while you're at it.

Crap. I was afraid the flyback was the issue. I can do a capkit, but how difficult is a flyback to replace? It is the one with the white adjustment knobs.

LOL - yeah you have one of those "awesome" flybacks. Flybacks aren't hard to do. Ensure you have solder wick and a solderpult (solder sucker) and you'll be fine. Radioshack has both items. Also please ensure you research how to discharge monitors.

If it is fuzzy, a cap kit won't help. The fly is taking a crap, and you might as well do a cap kit while you are there.

Replace your 47uf 160volt cap. see if the cap is starting to blow its top. Also when you take it out maybe a leg will stay in the board when you pull it. I have seen that a thousand times causing the b+ to screw up causing bad picture.
If you replace the flyback and still have the same problem, your tube might need a quick rejuve.

Thanks for all the responses! I'll pull the chassis out this weekend to check it out. I may just end up selling the game, though... :( This may be out of my league to fix.

out of my league to fix.

what !!!???

no !
if you can replace a capacitor, you can replace a flyback. in fact flybacks can only be installed one way while capacitors are polarized and can be installed backwards.

*remember* if you put your finger on a radial electrolytic capacitor(with chassis off and just to be safe, discharged) and you can feel that its "domed" theres a 90% chance its bad.

you can fix it !
its easy !
we know you can do it !

DUDE!!!!!! WAIT!!!!!

You can do this...you already have one big advantage in that the chassis already (somewhat) works. That's a big advantage to you. If the fly goes belly up before you change it, it will most likely take out some other parts and make the repair quite a bit more difficult & costly.

You can get the parts cheap from Bob - http://www.therealbobroberts.net/flyback.gif - Add some basic soldering skills and you're back in business. There's even "cap maps" that will help you locate the caps - http://www.therealbobroberts.net/k7000lyot.html -

You can do this! You really don't have much to lose by trying!!!!!

If it gets that bad, just send it up here and I'll do it....

Alright, I'll give it a shot. I will Probably order that $25 flyback/cap combo this weekend... If it really is not any harder than installing caps, I should be able to do it. And if it still doesn't work, well then I think I may need to send modessitt a pm!

Wish me luck!

I've done a cap kit before that turned out great. It just makes me nervous to work on any sort of board. Any little mistake could screw the whole thing up.

Wish me luck!

Good luck.

And don't worry, if it doesn't work when you're done, you can always throw it in a box and send it up here....

You're going to do this! And when you put it back together and you hear that tube charge up and a picture comes up you'll sigh with relief. And then when you make the adjustments (mandatory) and get that monitor looking bright and sharp you'll tell yourself, "I am God" and then you'll play a few games and enjoy it so much more because you not only fixed it but the picture looks so much better than it did before. There is truly no feeling like fixing your own stuff ;)

Fixed.

Also: selling off a game because the monitor is bad is like selling your car because it needs an oil change. Both can be changed out. Just have some patience.

Okay, the analogy is a /little/ flawed, but hopefully you get the point.

Not really. Large caps like filter caps have a plastic coating across the top with a little air between the coating and the cap, which some think means it is "domed" and needs replacing, when in actuality it is just fine...

Good example of an exception to the rule.

Well, either way, the chassis is coming out this weekend so I can get a closer look. I've had to discharge a monitor and do a cab kit on my Frogger machine before, so I should be okay on this one.
