*** Revised --- Doh! I just noticed the K7000 Common Repair Thread (Sticky) above.... :( I don't typically spend time in the monitor specific area of KLOV - I'll delete this post if I can figure out how... :(

I am looking for confirmation from the group regarding a bad flyback on a K7xxx chassis (standard res, just not sure which specific model yet). It was tried the first time today since it was probably pulled from the original tube. Needless to say, the flyback is bad and I got quite a light show.

Other than what Bob lists in his kit below and reflowing all the solder joints, are there typically any other parts damaged on a K7xxx when the flyback is bad? Thanks.

I have seen flybacks blow on a K7000 and damage no other parts - if they were shut off in time. Putting a new flyback on fixed it and I was back up and running like nothing happened.

BUT - if you are going to order the flyback, there are some other parts you should check in case you need them:

A) Caps - if they haven't been replaced in a while (or at all), do so.
B) C36 - make sure it's not shorted, as it can kill the flyback if it is.
C) C38 - make sure it's not shorted. It won't usually kill the flyback, but can die when the flyback does.
D) HOT - See if it's shorted (black lead on center leg and red lead on each of the outer legs).
E) VR (IC4) - Make sure you have no shorts between any of the legs. Since it and the HOT sit on that metal wall, the lightning from the flyback can sometimes affect them (even with the insulators).

That should be all the normal stuff. If you find any bad parts, order them when you order the flyback. If they check as good, don't...

Thanks!

I already planned to get/replace A & D in your list, so it is just as easy to do so with B and C while I am there. That way, I know it has been done and that they are good parts. I'll check on E. If it is suspect at all, I will likely replace it too. I don't mind "shotgunning" monitors if they are keepers and have no burn-in. :)

You don't really need to shotgun those parts if they are good. they don't fail due to age, so you don't really gain anything by putting in "fresh" parts. Only the caps should be replaced if they get old...

Got it. Thanks again. I'll provide an update when I get this stuff done.
