Anyone know what size wrench is used to adjust these? I would stick tools down there until I find out but Im afraid to, which leads me to my next question. I only have metal hex wrenches, can I use these to adjust the width coil as long as the monitor is off? I'm a big puss when it comes to monitors but I really want to get this thing dialed in right and bringing the width in just a bit is all I need to do.

I tried a hex wrench and got one to fit but it didnt seem like it wanted to turn. Its the grey screw inside of the coil not something at the bottom of the coil right? Can these things bind up over time or should I give it some more torque?

STOP USING A METAL HEX WRENCH!!

The core slug you're trying to turn is NOT metal. It's ferrite, and it's as brittle as pencil lead. You will most certainly crack it to crumbly pieces if you tweak it too hard with a metal tool. Not to mention the metal tool is conductive and will get VERY hot if you stick it in there while the chassis is running, causing severe burns. And it's conductive, causing a possibility of shock or shorting something out. Not a good idea.

You should use a plastic adjustment tool found in any television alignment tool kit to turn that width coil slug. If it's stuck, you can try working it back and forth while applying heat. If it's totally siezed, you're SOL - you'll need to replace the width coil to adjust it.

Optionally, if you're not planning on playing any other games with that monitor, you can opt for a more permanent width solution: Bob Roberts has a good writeup on how to change out a cap on your chassis to force the width adjustment:

Yea I could definitely tell it was very brittle which is why I thought it was maybe just old and seized up. I was trying to adjust it with the chassis off and gave up after giving the a little bit more of a twist and still not moving. I've got the image centered and hanging off both sides of the screen equally. I think that will have to do. Its looking better than it ever has before at least.

you can remove it from the chassis and use a hair dryer to warm the plastic and maybe the core will come loose.

DO NOT USE A HEAT GUN!!!!!!!!!! it will heat it to fast and melt/damage the housing.

i have heard of people doing this.

when you are done reinforce it with some hot glue as the bodies are fragile on them.
