Got a WG K4600 that needs about an extra inch of width horizontal on each side of the screen. I hear they are very fragile. So wondering the best way to adjust the width coil without breaking it? Plastic adjustment tool? Turn very slowly and carefully? Or just better to leave it alone?

you don't cause I think you only get about 1/4" of range with the coil and based on how fragile the K4600 ones are it's not worth mucking with. you need to change the width cap to a different value.

read this page: http://www.thegleek.com/bobroberts/width.html

do a Find to the part that says "Wells-Gardner K4600 Series - C615", below is a list of the different cap values. lower capacitance = wider picture, higher capacitance = narrower picture. find your C615 and take a picture of the numbers on it and post it in this thread. APAR sells a kind of universal width cap kit of various values.

I've personally only ever changed width caps on K7000s and K7203s in the past. I have a K4900 in a Dig Dug at work that I really need to change.

i wouldn't recommend changing the width cap until after you have capped the monitor chassis and reflowed it along with replacing C621 then set your B+ and see if you still even need any adjustment as a width coil won't get you an inch ever. it may only get you 1/4 to 1/2 inch but the other things may solve or improve your problem. we stock all the parts on the chassis and if your B+ pot is glued and you can't free it then we have a replacement and i personally would do the filter cap too.

Thanks for all the info. Glad I didn't try to adjust the coil. Makes sense to replace the C615 location cap, "range from .1uf to .56uf - .1uf being widest & .56uf being narrowest in pic range". And I now understand it's good to do a full recap first. All makes sense. I have a Hakko FX888, but I will need a desolder iron. This CRT stuff is all new to me. Will be fun to do my 1st recap. I appreciate all your help.

Thanks for all your help. Very new to CRT repairs. I have just watched a few K4600 videos. I will go back and check B+ adjustment. I agree a full recap and solder reflow is needed also. This CRT looks like it was never rebuilt? Fun project.

Re-cap and width cap should get you there. I had a k4600 a while back that was far too narrow and was able to work wonders with both. Have fun with it -- the k4600s are a pain, but at least the PCBs are beginner friendly from a soldering perspective (very little trace lifting compared to newer PCBs like k7000s).

we have the B+ settings in our TECH HELP tab on our site if you need and the B+ directly affects the image size so if B+ is low it will be smaller image and if its high it will have an image too large.
