I picked up a semi-complete Tempest that was in pretty rough shape a few months ago. I have since tracked down the missing hardware, glass bezel, and mounted the screen correctly—It was being held in with a bungee cord and a single bolt. o_O
I turned the screen on long enough to take a couple pictures. Brightness adjustments do nothing. I have a Wells Gardner 6100 cap kit and low voltage upgrade kit from Arcade Parts and Repair. I was going to delve into the rebuild this weekend and then look into adjusting the High voltage.
Should I be looking for anything else in relation to the super nova on screen?

just wanted to wish you luck getting this fixed! the first arcade i ever fixed was a space duel with a 6100, recapped it and installed an lv2000 and the picture looked great! and i cant wait to see how this one will look when you're done!

Well that's kinda mesmerizing but yeah if you turn that on again you probably have a good chance of burning a hole in the middle of your tube.

Definitely go through the guide, ensure everything's working in stages before trying to boot up the monitor again. When you take the neckboard off check the condition of the focus pin on the tube itself, it's the one off by itself on both the tube and the connector. There have been a few instances where the focus pin on the tube has broken, which is bad but potentially repairable with conductive epoxy.

I think that tends to happen with a lot of Tempests normally. When the Tempest logo comes up it starts as a pretty bright dot in the middle of the screen, so most of them have a burn in spot there. Luckily on a vector game behind the smoked glass most burn in is pretty hard to see unless something is drawn right on it.

Like OP's monitor already has that burn in spot but just don't wanna make a gigantic one, lol.

Definitely got some toasty holes already burned in the phosphor. 😬🔥

Holy shit, you have some brightness issues.

Turn the SCREEN pot on the outside of the HV cage all the way counterclockwise, and check the red screen wire that runs from the back of the focus block inside the HV cage all the way to the tube. Looks like it has a break somewhere in that path. There are several places between the ficus block and the tube where you can get breaks.

And don't operate the monitor that way. It will burn the phosphors even worse.
