I am replacing the flyback and doing a cap kit on my WG 2775 chassis. I have a few questions. The only other flyback I have replaced I took a cap of the neck socket and unsoldered the old flyback wire and re-soldered the new one but this socket doesn't seem to want to come apart. I don't want to break it. Can I just splice this wire with a butt connector? Also while doing the cap kit I noticed a resistor badly burnt looking at location R120 close to the yellow transformer. The schematic at WG website is not clear enough, and the color bands are all burnt away so I can see the wire wrap inside. Does anyone know the value of this resistor?

NO NO NO Absolutely do not splice that wire! It's carrying the focus voltage of 8,000 volts!

Wells used three different styles of picture tube sockets on their neckboards. the difference is how the focus wire connects to the socket.

One type you slide off a rear cover to reveal a solder terminal for the focus wire. Unsolder the old wire and solder the new one in place. Now slide the cover back on.

Another type has a slide up sleeve. You push up the sleeve about an eigth of an inch which releases the focus wire (not soldered). Simply shove the new wire (which has the insulation already stripped) into the hole the old one came out of as far as it will go. Now push the sleeve back down to lock the wire in place.

Yet another type has a "swing away" tab which will release the wire (also not soldered). Now pull the wire out of the hole and insert the new wire. Swing the section back down to latch the wire in place.

My schematic is crystal clear and it shows resistor R120 as a 68k 2 watt. If it burnt then chances are you should check diodes D107, d106a, and D106C for shorts.
 
Ok, I checked the diodes. They are fine. I had to order the resistor. I got the neck socket apart and put in the focus wire. But I have another question. There is a bipolar 10uf 50v cap. The kit has a non-polar 10uf 50v cap. It is about a tenth the size of the old one. I know most newer caps are smaller than their older counter parts but I've never seen this much of a difference. Is this right? Are non-polar and bi-polar the same thing?
