I just brought a Marvel Vs Capcom game home that is in nice shape but the monitor has an issue. After a minute or two the monitor will start fading in and out as if you are adjusting the brightness down then up...but never brighter then it should be. after a minute or two of this it will just stay out. Could this be the flyback as it looks like it might have a small crack near the focus knob. What else should I check before I start throwing money at this thing? Any ideas?
Thanks for the help,
Scott

Very well could be the flyback. If the flyback has white knobs, I'd replace it regardless.

If you can see a crack then I'd replace it.

No the flyback does not have white knobs. I just got the game so I am guessing the caps have never been replaced. Is there a map to show which spots are the worst for bad solder joints or do you just hit them all to make sure?
Thanks for helping,
Scott

You need to use your eyes. Areas on the board that are subject to higher heat (resistors, for example) will probably have worse solder than other places.

Thanks... I will pull the chassis tomorrow and take a look. I was just in the workshop playing with it and the problem must be with the flyback. When the monitor would stay blank and there was no longer any glow on the neck I would put a little pressure on the flyback and the monitor would come back to life. If it was just some bad solder joints on the flyback that would be great. The monitor looks very good when working. If this does not take care of the problem I will order a new flyback from Bob Roberts.
Thanks again,
I will post back tomorrow when I know more,
Scott

Pressing there could flex half the chassis easily.
There is a spot near the middle of the chassis that is prone to bad solder joints and broken traces that affects the heater voltage which will give the same symptoms you describe.
You'll notice the darker brown burnt looking discoloration near a large resistor.

Point being, just take a CLOSE look over the entire chassis.
(and neckboard too while you're at it)

I removed the chassis and reflowed some solder on the flyback and a couple of other places and the monitor stayed bright for about thirty five minutes. I will let it run for a little while longer tomorrow to make sure but I would have to say that bad a solder joint was the problem. Thanks for all your help. This forum is great.
Thanks again,
Scott
