Okay, here's one I have never seen before.

I'm working on repairing a Zaxxon game. It has a Wells Gardner 19K4961 that was working before the game boards died.

I just picked up replacement boards from Eldorado, and when connected and powered up, the image is split - the top of the image is on the bottom of the screen, and the bottom is on the top. The middle is missing.

I checked the Zaxxon dip switches, and they are set correctly. The monitor worked before the game boards failed.

I have attached the image. Before I run down the "re-flow all the connections" path and the "re-cap" path, is there anything else I should be doing?

I have already tried adjusting the VSIZE and VPOS without success.

One more thing - when the game powers on, the screen rolls from side to side. Trying to adjust the VHOLD doesn't seem to help. After it warms up, it seems to stabilize, but with the screen split.

what about your H-Hold.

with this issue until you cap it and re-flow everything it is hard to get a good starting point.

also be certain that your video connections are on properly and there is continuity form the edge connector to the monitor.

a bad/bent/broken pin/wire will do what you are describing.

Thanks Buffett, I'll use that as a starting point. My first step was to clean the game board connectors, since that is what changed.

The game is sideways, and I didn't see a H HOLD. I did see and try to wipe / adjust the V HOLD, no effect.

I'll pull and reseat all the connectors, and burnish them up on the monitor.

I'll make plans to get a cap kit from Bob, and then to discharge, pull and go through the re-cap and re-flow process.

What bugs me is the monitor was working when this game went off line, but is now buggy, and I really didn't get into the back of the game to get to the monitor.

your H-Hold pot is behind the 4 pots on the edge of the chassis caddy corner to the brightness pot.

Problem Solved and it WASN'T the monitor

Well, knock me silly-er.

I checked with Wells Gardner and got some good tips - check the 130 V DC between TP97 and the frame, and check Caps 365 and 363.

I made that Plan B.

I also checked with Eldorado. John suggested going after the SW4 DIP switch between U92 and U93 - switch the position, and then adjust.

I started with the easy part (since the monitor worked fine before the game boards died) and flipped SW4.

BING! Perfect picture.

Go figure.

If any moderators see this, could you move this thread to the Game Repair section, instead of the monitor section, since the monitor was fine.

So, if you have a Zaxxon and the screen image is split mid-screen, flip SW4 (I moved it from up to down) and try to stabilize the monitor there.

It worked for me. Woo Hoo!
