Hey again guys. Need a little help. I have a 13" WG7... as my supergun monitor and sometimes it doesn't turn on the first time, other times it works great, and other times it shuts off within 10 seconds of powering up. It either works, or it doesn't, or it shuts off by itself.

I'm thinking flyback because the monitor works and looks great when it's on, but it intermittently shuts off for no reason. It will always power back up, but sometime this vicious cycle happens 3 or 4 times before it will stay on for any length of time.Flyack? Opinions? It's much appreciated. Here are some pics...

Original caps? Cap it.

How do the solder joints look? If it's all original, I'm sure the power supply section is stressed and needs help.

No, a kit has been installed and the chassis looks pristine in person. I just had it on for 30 minutes with no issues. The time before that, it turned on and I had neck glow for roughly 2 seconds and it shut off, so it's being VERY fickle.

I can see at least one original cap on there. On that standoff board. Was this a Bob Roberts cap kit?

Did you resolder the power supply section?

What you're describing sounds like either a bad joint (and some joints, particularly in the power supply section, can LOOK good, but BE bad) or some kind of odd shutdown issue. But, shutdown issues are generally static; they're due to a component (unless there's crap joint).

Well, I bought the monitor already capped (or so they said). I didn't ask them where they got the caps from. I already ordered a new flyback. When I have the chassis out replacing that, I'll re-flow everything and see how it turns out. Only thing is if it becomes fixed, I won't know if it was the fly or the re-flowing. Ultimately, it doesn't matter as long as it gets fixed.

Thanks for the help.

yea totally recap that thing i see at least 3 original caps on it.

also it sounds like cold solder joints to me as well.

I will. I'll re-cap, re-fly, and re-flow. The picture is so good that I never thought about capping. It was the last thing on my mind because it looks so great...

It DOES look good. Since you don't have the flyback yet, I'd still hit the solder joints, since you can do that, and will have to, anyway. Besides, removing/replacing a K7000 chassis takes like two minutes. And, the monitor is already out. So go to town.

Agreed.....

There is no recognized standard for capping a monitor or shopping a game. There are a LOT of Ass Clowns out there that think replacing 1 cap means the monitor has been capped, and worse yet since the monitor has been capped the game has been shopped out.

Well, it looks like a new flyback has fixed it. Now it fires up every time on the first try and stays on. Has not shut off on me in two days OR not fired up on the first throw of the switch. :) Just wanted to report in with the fix.
