Got a DK and DK Jr. off CL yesterday. Two different sellers, but they lived about a mile and a half from each other. The Jr. looks pretty good overall. The guy I got it from lived in a nice neighborhood and took pretty good care of it.The worst part of the Junior is that some genius wrote some sort of out of order message on the bezel in magic marker.(As seen in the second pic.)Any suggestions on products that will remove it?

On the other hand the guy I got the DK from lived in an absolute shithole and the DK was in a shed (if you could have called it that) that was literally on the verge of collapsing. The guy even said he was waiting for it to do so at any time.So I basically rescued this poor neglected DK from certain death.
Was just crazy that they lived so close and yet very different environments.

It was an adventure.I almost threw both of them out of my truck and I wasn't even taking a turn but just going down the highway.Had the wheelwell not been there, they would have most certainly met a highway demise.Still not exactly sure as to why they almost eighty-sixed although I have my theories. But whatever,I got them home and can't wait to start restoring these!

I have a lot more pictures of the games in an album on my profile, but I'll post a few here. The Jr shouldn't be too much work to get looking spectacular. The DK on the other hand.....is gonna take a while.I will be making this into a red DK. And I'll also need to find a back to this game as the seller said he didn't have it.

not too bad, pretty good shape compared to some I've see in my buddy's ventures.

Good finds!

To remove the marker id try something like heavey duty degreaser like greased lightning, or purple power, maybe a mr clean magic eraser

as for the magic marker, just use go-jo

it will clean off in a mere 3 seconds, just wipe it off with a paper towel afterwards to not leave a residue

question

Good lookin games, but what would be the point in makin a blue DK red???? Its either red or its not....Not bein a prick just wondering( If you just like the red cabs no prob....) I had a red one once but my blue one was just way nicer so I kept it...For a couple yrs anyway...

I wouldn't use anything abrasive on that bezel unless you plan on completely buffing the entire thing out. The best thing to use to remove that magic marker is more magic marker. That's right, more. Take a marker use small circular motions over the old marker and quickly wipe it off with a soft lightly dampened towel. Only do small sections at a time. When you're done use dish soap to clean the rest of the residue off.

Both of those look pretty good. The DK is in much worse shape, but not as bad as you make it sound (judging by the pics in your profile). Congrats on the pick ups!

Use rubbing alcohol on the marker. It comes right off...

Nice pick ups anyway and good luck with the restos!

And if none of the other stuff works on the magic marker, I've found that Safest Stripper will clean most anything off of glass or plexi without damaging it. Keep it away from the painted side, of course. But if the marker is on the non-painted side, should work like a charm.

That bezel appears to have 100's of scratches in it. I personally wouldn't even waste my time on it. If you figure the money you'll have to pay for Novus 1,2 and 3 and your time buffing it .... meh pitch it and just spend the $50 at mikesarcade.com or and buy a new one.
But if you want to remove the marker - magic eraser with possibly some isopropolyne alcohol would clean it up.

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone!!! I really appreciate it! And yeah,I want to make it a red DK because I think the red DKs look way sweeter.(Just an opinion of course.) And yeah,if I really want it to look Ninty fresh I'll probably have to jettison the old bezel for a repro or NOS one.I probably won't start on these until my Frogger is at least working, which will hopefully be this weekend! Hopefully.....

Nice !! Those will be easy to restore . You got yourself two of the best arcade games ever !

i used magic eraser on my dkjr bezel. took the gunk off but required lots of elbow grease and novus 2 to remove the swirl marks the magic eraser left. just an fyi
