Wells 4900's what do you think of them? I think they are pretty kick a$$!

I've been digging through my piles of chassis and found that I own quite a lot of 4900s. So I started testing them and ya know what? 9 out of the 10 I fired up work! (still have many more to test) The one that doesn't work is because years ago I didn't have a clue how to swap tubes.. Ended up choosing one that was waaaay to far off on ohms (left original yoke on it) that it shorted the chassis.

Anyway, this all started cause I rebuilt a k4900 for a customers qbert. It was one of the easiest cap kits I've installed. These chassis seem to be pretty straight forward and rocksoid.. Funny how it's taken me years to notice this! Eventhough I've been a huge Williams fan and most of the ones I've owned had 4900s in them.

Couple of things I've noticed. Some of the chassis have a very wide horizontal picture. One came out of a Jungle King and another came from a moon patrol. Are these set up at the factory with a larger width cap? Other thing I noticed was the damper control. Some use a pot attached to a very small pcb. Others use a wire that plugs into one of three pegs. Is that just a version or change in design?

Just amazed that I have so many of these kicking around that have had little to no work done to them in years and they fire right up. Also, are these flybacks bulletproof? Haven't seen one bad one yet.. Same with k4600s too..

i have began to really like them as well.
i have around 20 or so to fix when i get time.

i have seen one or two flyback's bad since i have been working on them.

one was damaged in shipping.

and the other was blown apart pretty bad. but oddly enough the H.O.T. VR and fuse were still good:confused:

i have one here i repaired with the width cap replaced at the factory and it is to big for a normal game. so it must have came out of a Jungle King or a moon patrol.

4900 :thumbs_up:
i like the fly's they hold up well built to last.

4600 :banghead::no2:
a pos of a chassis in my opinion but the fly's are great built to last.

4900 is one of the smallest and easiest cap kits to install. Considering some of mine were in continuous service for around 20 years and still work, one of the toughest monitors as well. 4600 is a little harder to work on just because of the way it's put together. As far as the bulletproof flybacks in the 4600, maybe mine just all decided to die at the same time. I had three of them that were stored away because I didn't have time to fix them a few years back. Finally decided to fix them and all three had dead flybacks. I'm sure of that because the one good flyback I had on hand worked on all of them. It's a shame that beginning with the 7000 series, WG monitors just kept getting more and more trouble prone and harder to work on with every new edition. Wish I could trade them all for 4900s and GO7s.

I like it when I get a game with sound but no pic (dead monitor) and I find a 4900 inside. That means that a cap kit and some solder cleanup and I'm usually done. Do a little Rejuv (4900's seem to need it quite a bit) and I have a nice reliable monitor....
