Last night, something that I had heard rumors about for quite some time, legends, and tales relegated to late-nights around campfires has finally become a reality in my life.

Yes, this could only mean one thing...

My beloved original 60GB "chrome" model PS3 with a 500GB HD finally gave in to the pressure of its many brethren, during a Saturday night of Daytona USA and Netflix.
I don't think it was a heat issue since I am rather obsessive about cleaning the vents, and Netflix was actually paused as the system died while I was doing work on a laptop for a few minutes.

My main question now is what are my options?

Can I actually repair this (or get it repaired) without sending it to SONY?

I really have no interest in the PS4 due to lack of backwards compatibility, and no free PSN account support. I was also using my PS3 as a media hub, which as I understand it the PS4 cannot be used for.

I also have a number of movies purchased from the PSN store, I would rather not flush that money down the toilet. This is just another reason why I am not a fan of digital-only DRM-laiden distribution. This is my fault for buying it, I know; just a mini-rant/vent.

I do have a complete system backup, but I'm not really sure how that helps me at this point Any more experienced users who have dealt with this before are welcome (and encouraged) to chime-in here with some advice on how to proceed. I remember reading that simply swapping hard-drives to another PS3 will not work, because the new system will just format the hard-drive.

I don't want to swap for a different PS3 model, because I have a number of PS2 games that I still enjoy, and am making use of the BC. Or at-least I was!
