Weird Tempest/6100 monitor issue - FAT instead of BRIGHT

I've got one Tempest chassis (WG6100) that you can either have very dim or very blurry. But:

- Instead of getting BRIGHTER, more intense draws just get FATTER. You can see this on the self-test screen
- Happens with any tube and any HV cage, problem seems to follow the chassis

As a result, if you turn up the brightness (both Focus and Brightness seem to do something very similar, which is also different than normal), things just get fat and blurry.

Anyone ever run into that before? If I go to the self-test screen where you can see the 5-6 lines of each color in Tempest, you can see they just get progressively wider as you go from left to right.

I've tried a spare HV Cage (no difference) and a spare tube (some difference but not a lot), so it seems to follow the chassis. But I just had that chassis rebuilt, so it'd be odd to just throw all new caps and transistors in it without understanding what/why!

Cheers,
Dave

Do you have a video of it? That sounds really strange.

do you have another neck board you can try? Check the two wires coming from the HV cage to the neck board.

Yeah, you beat me to it. Definitely check the wires going to/from the neck. They like to break, often where they meet the neck board, and can even break inside the insulation sometimes, so they still might look connected, but aren't. If any of them look floppy, you should de-solder, clip off the last 1/4" of wire, re-strip, and re-solder them.

Also, there is a small cover on the end of the neck connector on the neck board. It just clips on, so you can carefully pop it off (with a small screwdriver, if needed), and check that the wire going in there is solidly soldered to the connector, as it can break sometimes underneath that small cover.
