The top isn't the same as a Centipede cabinet. Its more similar to Gravitar/Black Widow but still not exact. Irish cabinet?

If it is, it's a very unusual cabinet. This is the well-known Irish Tempest: http://forums.arcade-museum.com/showthread.php?p=2185793

Man, I am torn on that side art. On the one hand, I don't know who would custom-print a full side like that, and on the other hand, every other piece of tempest art like that has the aliens in the center of the rays.

prototype of some sort?

it'd be nice to know if there are tags inside the cabinet or attached to the wiring harness, or if there are original board stickers and the like.

It sure as hell looks like a Centipede cabinet to me... same exact profile anyway.

The pictures are cropped in such a way that the top of the cab is not fully visible, but if you look closely, this mystery Tempest has that same angled "peak" above the marquee that Centipede (and Dig Dug, Kangaroo, Asteroids Deluxe, etc) have.

According to my Replay Magazine yearbooks, Centipede was released in June '81, and Tempest was released in November of that same year.

It's reasonable to assume that some test market or proto Tempests were shipped in the cab Atari already had assembled (a Centipede style), before they finalized and released what we know as the actual "wedge shaped" Tempest cabinet.

Pretty damn cool, I'd love to know serial numbers, tags/info inside, etc.
