was there a dedicated pole position 2?

Pp2

There were 1500 or so of them made. They looked like this one:

stickers for the PP conversions were optional. This is a dedicated:

The blue at the bottom isn't original.

@7146aaron i know this is an old post but just want to confirm, so Atari did make new UR cabs for PPII when this game came out, they werent just conversions of the original PP cabs. This aside from the wider UK/Irish cabs, looks like a pregnant PP cab in the pic/post above, lol.

are there any official records available anywhere? I've seen the posts were cabinet production numbers are listed but just curious where those are sourced from and if any documentation exists on serial numbers, etc

I do like the PPII sideart, it's different

thanks

PP2 was a kit game in US but had dedicated Namco cabinets in other parts of the world (Irish cab). Here's a pic of my PP2 cockpit, you can see some of the PP1 artwork underneath:

Here's a couple of links with a bit more info

that's what I thought (they were kits) but Aaron's post seems to state there were new US PP II cabs. The picture above is of the PP I US style cab (non UK) with the PPII artwork. He says there were 1,500 made.

the second article you linked kinda leaves room for the possibility there may have been (new/non-kit) PPII cabs in the US...
As for the cabinets, it would appear that virtually all PP2's in the USA were only offered as upgrade kits to existing PP1 cabs.

to me I read that as... "so you're saying there's a chance" :)

I gotta believe there is a possibility that some operators/etc that perhaps did not buy PP I and not having a cab to upgrade, would need to purchase an entirely new cab when PP II came out. If that were to be the case, I would think they took existing PP I cabs, used the PP II artwork, marquee, 4 track control panel and glass and sent them out the door from the factory as brand new units. I guess we'll never know for certain unless someone has ties to anyone that worked @ Atari at the time and know's the full story.

There is no evidence to suggest or support the claim that there were dedicated US-cab-style PPII's shipped from the factory.

Atari was very good with their documentation. We have manuals for all Atari cabs/products, and all products have documentation and product numbers. None exists for a dedicated US PPII cab.

If someone wanted to prove there was a dedicated PPII cab made, they would need to find a manual for one, and the part numbers it was sold/documented under.

I had a pole position 2 upright but it was a long time ago. The art was different and I seem to remember the cab being slightly different. If it was a conversion it was done really well.
