Starhawk was a pretty popular game in 1977 if you were lucky to have one in your town. Couldn't help but notice the controls kind of imitate the controls from the ficticious Last Starfighter Arcade machine from the film. A Fun & Popular game back in the day.

Jonathan R. Betuel stated the genesis for the film came about because he wandered into a video arcade and saw a young boy playing a video game. At that time, he was reading the book The Once and Future King by T. H. White. He wondered what would happen if a video game were a metaphorical sword in a stone, and a boy racked up an incredible score, which would cause a ripple effect across the universe

Star Wars Arcade was released in May of 1983 and the Last Starfighter Opened July 13th 1984? Sounds like the concept was developed and written long before May 1983. I am thinking Starhawk was the inspiration for the film.

Here is something you don't normally see on a starhawk.

It had some pretty cool Cabinet art. Remember playing that back in the day🤣. Someone brought up the Arcade game, brought back alot of old memories. One of the best things about California back in the day is that so many Arcade games originated here and were put into Arcades around here. California never had a shortage of Arcade video games.
Willing To bet this game was the Inspiration for The Last Starfighter Arcade game in the Script.

The evidence both for and against is pretty compelling. I'm definitely torn.
