Hi there, I played the environmental Discs of Tron at my local arcade quite happily not knowing that decades later collectors would be salivating at how rare the machine would become.
My question is, was EDOT really rare back then or was it as common as regular Tron and for some reason (I guess it's massive bulk) did it become rare as the years went by?

I don't think I would consider it rare today in terms of the collecting world, just that most owners keep them when they get them so there is perceived rarity. They had one in my local mall arcade growing up, it's an awesome game.

I had no idea DOT or EDOT even existed until I joined this forum. I never saw one back in the day.

I know that my local arcade had one.

Wasn't there for long, but it was there.

i only remember seeing trons, dots, and edots @ the disneyland starcade back in the 80's.

they had a row of nothing but doubles and triples of these games, really wish i had taken pics back then :(

+1. I can't remember ever seeing one anywhere. Minnesota was kind of funny BITD. There were a lot of games I never saw here, but I played them when we went to Florida on vacation. Games like Super Punch Out, Dark Adventure, etc.

Ain't that the truth. I never even saw a Star Wars here BITD. No EDOTs, no TRONs, no GORFs, or I just don't remember them, which seems kinda strange as they kinda call attention to themselves. Did I see Pacman around here? Sure. Altered Beast? You bet. Mario Bros and Donkey Kong? Of course. Outrun, Centipede, Dig Dug? Yep, yep and yep. DOT or EDOT? Never.

Same here. The only place I ever saw a Punch Out, Paperboy and Playchoice was in the hotel lobby when my family went to Disneyworld. :)

I saw one a couple different times at the same place. The Space Needle in Gatlinburg. Which if you know TN, G-burg and Pidgeon Forge is collectively one of the largest collections of arcade games anywhere. Although, in these modern days, most are newer games. Very few classics. I probably saw the EDOT at the Space Needle somewhere between '88 and '93.

I never saw a EDOT or GORF, but Tron was everywhere.

Pretty sure there were two of them around here BITD. Gonna get slapped for this but I don't understand the current frenzy with it... it's an average-ish game imho. :dunno:

Reportedly 384 made.

I don't have any documentation to say otherwise, but I find that number to be quite low. There are quite a few eDots/choppedDots out there to this day so I'm thinking they made many more than that. The game is expensive simply because of demand.

The real question concerning the number of eDots out there is how many are in Hawaii currently ;)?

I was a teenage in the early 1980's and I have been to a lot of arcades BITD. We had 7 full size arcades in our town plus all the secondary locations (7-11's, bars, misc stores, etc). I saw TRON uprights in all the arcades and a good percent of them had EDOTs. I never remember seeing any regular upright DOTs. While some of the secondary locations had TRONs I never saw a EDOT in a secondary location (7-11, bar, etc). It was also common of the larger arcades to have doubles or triples of some games. I can remember seeing lots of TRON games side-by-side just like PacMan, Galaga, Space Invaders, etc. I never saw any arcade with double EDOTs.

The TRON movie was in the theaters at the same time the TRON video game got released so a lot of theaters had TRONs but EDOT/DOTs came out way after the movie so the chance to pair them to the original movie never happened.

Also due to the fact that EDOTs are large 700lbs games I would assume a lot of them got junked.

Operator cost of an original TRON was much less than an EDOT and the Tron fad was over so lots of operators did not buy them to begin with.

I think I saw one or two at Aladdin's Castle BITD at the local HIP mall. I have seen at least a dozen since I've been collecting.

dot & edot

I am orig from the LI/NYC area and saw pretty much every game but:

Never a DOT. EDOT was only at 1 arcade (Green Acres Mall) for maybe a month.
