Here are 2 pictures. The one with all FFFFs is not in test mode, the one with all kinds of characters is in test mode.

One of the ROMS also has the window exposed.

When I bought the unit this is how it was.

I know the test screen shows bad ram up top, but I am not sure if that is just a spit out of the bad characters, or if there really is bad ram. I have never played with one of these Atari boards so any help is appreciated.

Thanks.

The 2101 RAMs are notorious for going bad and start there. While you are at it, change ALL of the ROM sockets as a preventative against future issues. Those sockets WILL go bad. Don't worry about the exposed window being a problem. The board was inside a dark enclosed cabinet. You do want to cover it, though.

Best,

Bill

Well, I replaced all the RAM and now I just get 3s all across the screen. I noticed two more chips, maybe ram, at N7 and M6? They say atari on them, 16pin.

Those are PROMs.

Make sure you didn't pull a trace or a plated thru hole when changing the RAM. Also make sure you used the right 2101.

2101 = slower
2101-1 = faster

I will check over everything. The RAMS say 2101a. They came from Bob Roberts, so I assume they are correct.

On the garbage test screen it seems to point to M6 as bad ROM. I don't know if that is a legit error, or just part of the garbage screen.

I will get with Bob and see if he carries those proms.

THanks

Ed

Thanks,
Problem is, someone tried to replace the main RAMs before. The board is in pretty rough shape, I am going to work through it and see if I can at least pin down anymore bad traces. The Ram pinouts are all in bad shape so I have been checking continuity everywhere. I have 2 more sockets to remove.

Would the screen be garbage if the PROMs are bad?
