Warlords cocktail owners - school me on your monitors

For those of you who own a Warlords cocktail, can you educate me a bit on your monitors?

I've got a 14" Sanyo sitting on my workbench that I pulled out of a Nintendo cabaret cabinet. The tube has Warlords burn on it. It runs on 100 volts and takes standard (non-inverted) video.

Burn can be seen here:

When I first pulled the monitor to recap it, I noticed that the power cord ended in a molex connector instead of the standard Sanyo 2 prong plug. I thought to myself, "that's odd, who would hack this connector on like this?" I went ahead and fitted a 2 prong plug on there and thought nothing more of it.

Also, the video input wires were soldered directly to the chassis pcb of the monitor, "man that's REALLY weird" I thought. They were soldered directly to the board, and ended in bare wires. Whatever, I worked with it.

Fast forward to today, and while browsing some threads. I stumble across SRW's Warlords cocktail project for sale. I see this pic:

That's most definitely my monitor in that thread, a 14" Sanyo. And would you look at THAT...both the power connector AND the video feed match the description of what I encountered when I took this monitor out of the Nintendo mini. So it appears that my monitor IS in fact an old Warlords cocktail monitor.

That being said, do the Warlords cocktails use a monitor that operates on 100 volts? I only ask because I've seen a few different types of monitors used in Warlords cocktails over the years, but I thought they were all 120v monitors. Is there a 100v transformer in the bottom of the Warlords cocktails?

Not sure about Warlords, but Atari did use Sanyo and Sharp Monitors. They were modified to take non-inverted video and modified to take 120V.

Crap...you think I've been under-volting this monitor this whole time??

How would I even find out whether or not my monitor requires 100v or 120v?

Warlords cocktail came with a 14 tube. Basically it's the same tube as the one in the Commordore 1084.

Power coming to the monitor on Warlords cocktail is as follows

BK is 120vac
BK / W is 100vac
W is common

Depending on which monitor and requirements you need, both currents are there for you! Just pin the monitor plug accordingly.

The Sanyo in your pic looks like it indeed runs 100vac based on the molex, if for instance you replace the monitor with a 120vac model and reuse that same molex plug, just move the Red to the outer plug position and your good to go at 120vac.

Those Atari guys were smart!

WINNER, WINNER, CHICKEN DINNER!!

Thanks for that info, that TOTALLY makes sense to me. So Atari included a transformer in their Warlords cocktail cabinets that outputs both 120v AND 100v. Now it all makes sense. So my monitor DOES take 100v.

Well, that means I'm going to need to get a spare 100v transformer if I want to use this monitor in a cab that doesn't have a standard Nintendo setup.

Thanks!!

The transformers that I have found in Ataris could be jumpered to provide either 100V or 120V isolated AC. Just follow the instructions and jumper as appropriate. My Xybots (since sold) originally came with a Sanyo EZ monitor that somebody had bypassed the iso transformer and wired directly to the 120VAC wall current. When I replaced it with a WG4600 I wired the iso back in and jumpered it for 120V and it worked great.

Atari also used 14" Sanyo's in Missile Command cocktails.

Atari did get into contracts with Sanyo (and Sharp) in the late eighties (think Galaga 88, Dragon Spirit, etc). These are the Sanyo's that are modified to operate on 120VAC, and non-inverted video. The easiest way to spot the difference?.....the big filter cap.....

470uf160V = 100VAC monitor
330uf200V = 120VAC monitor (this is also a EZY, as opposed to the EZV)

That settles it for me, mine has a 470uf filter cap, so it's definitely a 100v monitor, and it's running with non-inverted video.

If memory serves......those old 14" Sanyo's that Atari used are model AZZ.

I've posted this before when Sanyo threads come up.......Sanyo made a lot of different models (even though we only see, generally, a couple different ones). There's quite a few Sanyo models.....in my years.....that I've only ever seen once! When it comes to Sanyo monitors (and you DON"T have a EZV).....it could be anything!

Unfortunately, this monitor was found installed in a Nintendo cabaret cabinet, a Space Demon, actually. The cabinet had been raped over several years to install multiple games including a pair of bootleg pac boards and a Tutankham boardset. Everything was wired to some triple throw switches and wires were criss-crossed everywhere, soldered to the pcb edge connectors, etc. A really big friggin mess is what it was.

There WAS a 100v transformer in the bottom of the cab, but that's currently in use on my test bench with a Nintendo switching power supply for Nintendo board work. I'd like another xformer to replace the one in the cabinet.

My Space Demon thread:

Sorry to raise such an old thread but I am currently restoring a gutted Warlords. The monitor that came with the parts is Sanyo 14" but I'm also having trouble determining 120v or 100v.

My filter cap is 560uf 200v. I have two transformer bricks the rotten old one from the original warlords and another in much nicer shape from a centipede cocktail. The centipede one puts out 120v AC at the monitor power but I can't work out if the Sanyo is 100v or 120v. It just has two wires coming direct from the chassis.

Seems like it's a bit of a crap shoot. All my jumpers on my power bricks give my different Vac on the accessory plug but none of them give me 100vac

You need the special Atari raster brick that has a 100v output for the monitor power.

They are different from the common color raster brick. There are other threads here about them. (Try advanced searching for posts by me with '100v' and 'brick' in the bodies. That should find relevant threads.)
