Watched the movie yesterday. I forgot how many games were in that seen at the begining. I dont remeber them all but here is a partial list:

2 Trons
Galaga
Donkey Kong
Mario Bros
Asteroids
Tutankham
Zaxxon
Next to Zaxxon was a Sega Game
Next to that one looked like Gravitar or Space Duel (Only saw the CP)

There are a few more.

I wanted a speaker that would make my computer talk sooooo bad after seeing that movie. Alas, movie trickery. It would be a couple years before I had a mildly entertaining voice program that kind of worked.

I had one on my TI-99/4a. Forgot what year that was though.

War Games is awesome.

On a side note, I just watched T2 last night and re-visited the arcade seen. Did anyone notice they have both the cockpit Afterburner and the upright in the same arcade?

Good movie. Nice soundtrack too. I'm pretty convinced that the voice for Joshua is not from any sort of standard equipment. It's just too cool compared to the other types of synthesised voices you'd get out of computers/speak & spells/etc. at that time.

Why wouldn't he have played Leisure Suit Larry? Hell, Zork seemed cooler than Global Thermal Nuclear War.

Does anyone remember the MS-DOS BASIC game "Global Thermonuclear War"?

It's impossible to find, but it was really cool for an old BASIC game. You had a txt screen where you chose your nuclear weapons (subs, ICBMS, etc) and how to deploy them, and then a map popped up with whatever weapons you had. It started playing out global thermonuclear war somewhat like the map looked in WarGames - with a curvy line that animated until a yellow impact circle showed up. The screen would flash dramatically when something was hit, too.

Whoever had the least casualties at the end (U.S., U.S.S.R.) was the winner.

Was it this:

A video game named after the film was released for the ColecoVision in 1983. It played similarly to the NORAD side of the "Global Thermonuclear War" game, where the United States had to be defended from a Soviet strike by placing bases and weapons at strategic points. A real-time strategy game that was very loosely related to the film was released for the PlayStation and PC called WarGames: Defcon 1 in 1998. The film also inspired the Introversion game DEFCON (2006).[10]

Warroom was the game - some obscure third party vendor, unlucky to catch the great crash of 83.

(they also had Wargames for the coleco vision - not a bad game considering).

I had a speech synthesizer program for my C-64 called "SAM" (short for "Software Automatic Mouth"), looks like it was the first commercially available one, came out in 1982, so it did predate War Games. I don't know if his (in War Games) was supposed to be software or hardware though. Here's a little clip of what SAM sounded like on the C-64. Man, I haven't heard that demo in YEARS :D

For network purposes I have always named my main computer Joshua...

The first computer I built, I changed the startup sound to "Greetings Professor Falken", and the Shutdown to "Wouldn't you rather play a nice game of chess".

One of the best movies ever!
