Wanted: Karate Champ Player vs Player BOOTLEG!

Successful dump guys! I dumped the files and forced it to run in mame from the command line (GUI version gave rom warnings and would not run).

Great work!

I wonder if now we could just do a ROM burn to our existing player vs player boards or not.

I am still researching your serial number theory. I found another board like yours in the 20,000 to 21000 range. Like 20,800. Has the mods too.

I am having the seller test it so that we can verify if this is true. I am also finding one player version Japanese boards that fall into the low 20,000 range, and as we may know are complete different chip set than the player version player hardware.

Send me the link to the rom image you have created when you get a chance I would love to see it run!

Thank you so much!

Look what I was able to replicate!

How did you do that?? It's the German version oldworldman posted!!! SO both versions were made upon the same PCB! You are an electronic genius!! I wish I had those skills too! Incredible :)

Whoa. So it's not a glitch after all. Just different coding. Could you do two rom
Images now?

I would love to have both!

This is awesome. Great work!

I agree on with oldworldman says, it would be nice to have both romsets separately. I will make sure to have your name credited for these dumps in MAME.

I will get the romsets out shortly.

Actually the boat thing is a "sort of" glitch.

My version has a mix of the "Karate Champ (US VS version, set 1)" and a few roms unique to "Taisen Karate Dou (Japan VS version)" along with 1 completely unique rom not found on romident.

The boat is recreated by copying 1 rom from Karate Champ (US VS version, set 1) over the unique rom in my version. I suspect when the Karate Champ machine with the boat occurred after a repair technician thought it was bad rom and re burned it with one from the Karate Champ (US VS version, set 1).

Posting in excel file showing differences. My version is listed below. I highlight differences in the known version vs mine. Mine board looks 100% factory, including the rom stickers. My running theory is it is an early Karate Champ VS version that bridges the gap between the Japan VS version and the US VS version.

Ok so it was a glitch, sort of. Quite interesting.

So what should we do at this point?

If you have a Japanese rom set in the player vs player version, I would be more than happy to pay you for all rom sets.

Let me know what you want for burned rom chip sets of all three versions of these for me.

I would just assume buy the chips already burned from you that way I can just plug them into our existing player vs player boardsets and be done.

Also, it is the least we can do to compensate you for your research and troubles of this lifelong endeavor.

Feel free to PM me if you would like, if you prefer to take this offline.

Thank you so much.

In my case, I want the romset only to have it preserved into MAME. This was always my goal when I decided to track down this romset. But I agree with oldworldman, if you want to charge us upon these files, YOU DESERVE THE FAIR! :D

Let me know how much you want for these new dumped files/romsets.

I will have to check my rom stash to see about burning sets....no guarantees it will work though with out the mods to your board like mine has. I will get some romsets uploads for yall in a bit too...I just wanted to play with it a bit more.

Doing more research....check out the palettes. The original version also has the different dialog in the rom....can any one translate the japaness ones?

Maybe its a mistranslation and at one time the girls said different phrases?

The one of the left in my version, the one on the left is the US set 1....

As far as I can tell it's a direct translation. At least everything else is.

The way you translate Japanese to English is not always direct for example "hajiimi" as spelled in English means start up. Rather than begin.

Depending on how you look at it.

The rom images when you get them completed will do and will give us a chance to play with them also.

Thank you so much.

Also, do you think these images will run on Mac mame?

I saw you had issues with mame from that era just wondering.

And maybe on the later boardsets after 21000, they built the mod into the new boardsets and just happened to change the phrasing to my hero while they were at it.

Hopefully to run your rom dump we won't have to have the modification your board has.

All we can do is try.

I know this is a serious necro bump but I just pulled this Bootleg from a pile I got in a couple weeks ago.
It has the "My Hero Deserves the Fair".

If anyone is still looking for the actual bootleg PCB set, DM me and we can work something out.

So its not actually bootleg...just a early boardset

Just for those coming late to the thread:

I just played through all the known ROM sets in MAME. If playing through MAME ROM sets:

It's NOT US VS Version set 1 or set 2.

US VS Version Set 3 is the White "My Hero Deserves the Fair"

US VS Version Set 4 is the red "My Hero Deserves the Fair" with the sailboat.

That being said, a couple pages back there was talk about a bootleg called Karate Master. Did those get dumped? There are no Karate Master ROMS out in the wild as far as I can tell.
