Wanted: Karate Champ Player vs Player BOOTLEG!

I think I may have this board. I was looking at this post someone previously mentioned (https://forums.arcade-museum.com/showthread.php?t=282000) and I have this board in my possession from a warehouse raid I just did (https://forums.arcade-museum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=149003&d=1374367318). I also have a Karate Master Marquee and Bezel that I pulled off the game and the four joysticks. If you are still looking send me a PM, having a friend see if he can dump the ROMs to positively ID this board.

I'm sure the OP will be interested. (As am I, to see how different the ROMs are.)

It would be great to have this dumped, if you do have this bootleg.

I know I would be interested maybe I can even do a ROM swap on my bootleg if this comes out? The OP has got me interested too :)

Thanks for the kind replies people. I really really have interest in this one for sure. The problem I face is that I live in Brazil, so I cannot get a PCB here to test it myself or dump it. It has to be done by someone who actually lives in U.S. If one of you guys could help rhuntervf1s on testing it himself or getting his pcb to hook it up and won the 1st match with the white karateka, it would be awesome! The only way I can help with is sending one of you the money for the PCB handling/dumping and the shipping cost from his location to yours.

That's all I can do this time :p
If one of you guys can do it, send me a PM and we keep in touch :)

I'm going to be getting a horde of pcbs and some of them look like classic Data East I'll be more than happy to test them out and let you know if I find it. Let's see if we can bring this grail home :)

Coltrane,

I am bumping this post as I am now on a mission to find this boardset.

I checked my board inventory and realized that I have a bootleg boardset for karate champ that was tested but I am not sure if it was screened for the caption we are looking for.

It came out of a game that was actually dubbed as "karate master" and I have the marquee and bezel for karate master which held this bootleg board KC boardset.

I am going to pull this boardset this weekend from my inventory, and verify that this boardset has the caption we are looking for and if it does, proceed to do a rom dump and get this to you.

I will keep you posted. I had the other day John at El Dorado games look through his stash and he had 15 working KC board sets but they were not boot leg or clones.

I cannot believe how hard this is to find now when it was very prevalent on KC games I played back in 1984.

This surprises me.

Same here! The very 1st KC version I played here in Brazil was this one too. And it was a very common version around here, I saw many places which had this version instead of the original one. I don't know why this version turned out to be so hard to find nowadays.

I think what makes it so hard to find is the fact that sellers do not have interest or do not have a way to turn the game on and play it for a while (up to level 2 at least) to see if it is the alternate version or not.

How many boardsets of karate champ do you own now?

I am now interested in the Taisen karate dou roms. It's the player vs player Japanese version of this game.

I might want to convert one of my player vs player board sets to this someday.

This dump is on mame so should be possible.

I wonder if this is a computer glitch?

Has the message, but a boat?

This boardset was found in Germany.

I too am glad Oldworldman is on this one. It has been a long-standing topic for sure.

However weirdly, I also just noticed that Oldworldman was the first person to reply in this thread, over two years ago. I thought he was new to this topic, but I guess no?

Good luck this weekend, and let us know the results ASAP! :D

Thanks Andrew,

Yeah even I did not even know when I dug this thread up that I had posted my comments on this matter on it. But it goes to show you i have had these same concerns as Coltrane for two years at least.

Hi Sumer I am already on it and can do better than that.

I plugged in the bootleg board I had just now and it said "My Hero"

I plugged in every other deco board I had in stock and all say "My Hero"

I firmly believe, that it does not matter if it is bootleg or not, I believe it can exist on both dedicated and clone boardsets.

It has to. I played this game in dedicated cabinets when it came out why would they put a bootleg boardset in a brand new Data east cabinet?

Does not make sense.

I have other people looking. Bootlegs/dedicated of everyone I know with boardsets.

I will find it. I won't give up! I Promise and you can ask anyone in my close circle when I make a promise, I mean it.

The screen shot I posted was from you tube and they were German who was demonstrating it. i have never seen that screen before with the boat. Obviously not a glitch because everything else on the boardset the way it operated seemed normal.

I was almost certain my bootleg was going to have what we were looking for but it didn't. It even came out of a karate master bootleg cabinet and still no go.

I am waiting for an answer from an owner in the following days as he has to get a test station together before he can tell me what his boardset has.

I know where 4 other boardsets are I am going to see them tomorrow, but I have no way to test them.

I will keep you guys posted. Sorry for any disappointment.

Onward and upward.

Mine says this and I don't think its a bootleg. I can also dump the roms!

This is great news.

Please do dump them. Depending on the size, you might even be able to zip and post them here as an attachment. (I think the max file size is 500k, but a zipped file might make it.) Else we can find another place for them.

I have family here for about a week so I won't be able to pull the board out of the machine until they are gone.

I took this picture about 5 minutes ago.

Ok I had a second to pull the PCB....this definitely does not look like a bootleg. I did notice some mods on the pcb that look factory. In fact if you do a search for Karate Champ pcbs on ebay and google images you will notice the exact same mods on several boards within a similar serial number range as mine. Almost all of the ones with this mod fit between 20000-21000.

I have yet to see a Karate Champ board set online with a serial lower then 20000 so maybe this was in the first run of the Player VS Player boards?

Linx310 please dump this ASAP!!!!

I'm glad that Linx310 has found this one, we now may rest in peace!! It's another rare version of a game being preserved!!

Thanks to everyone here who joined my quest to find this alternate Karate Champ version. It's a great game that DESERVES THE FAIR!! :D

Linx310, I will send you a PM regarding the dump of this pcb, so we can make sure we will have a good/verified dump.

OBS: That other picture posted by oldworldman is slightly different since the baloon is red and it has a boat below it which apparently came from the 1 player version of the game (you can see this boat at the bull on the beach bonus stage). And that one I've never seen before!!! What were they thinking?? LOL :)

Cheers,
RColtrane

Could be. Maybe they had the dialog changed to "My Hero" with a red heart later to make it to look more fun. Interesting anyway!

Yay! Yeah I was working on karate champ all weekend to solve this mystery! Thank you so much for finding the solution to this.

I got in my Japanese one player and tested it and it works great!

I am not sure it was the one player version Coltrane because the girl was not included in the one player versions or is there more to this mystery than I realize?

Yeah that makes since for this not being a bootleg and on an earlier run of the boards.

Please let me know where you post this dump and when you guys finally have a rom image please pm me with a link!

This is awesome and great news!
