I decided I'm tired of squeezing my games through a 31" doorframe, so I'm going put a 36" door between my workshop (which has a large exterior door) and my game room. I stumbled on this when my wife suggested a pocket door:

We both like the look of this, but I've never seen one "in the wild". Are there any negatives that I'm missing? It would only be used when moving a game in or out, so would be closed most of the time.

I did one in my parents house that was inside the wall, so the door disappeared when open. Other than that, this looks like the same concept, works pretty well when a swinging door isn't practical (typically when they are used)

I don't see the point of it. I guess you could do it if you had something immediately in the way, so a door swinging open would hit it...

I think the one you linked to looks horrible. Just my opinion. The pocket doors that dissapear in the wall are cool, but just because everything's hidden. Having it all out hanging on the outside, and the door just rides a track and then hangs on the wall looks god awful in my honest opinion.

I have 2 on both my entery ways though the game room.. nothing too the size your asking though. I like the fact thats its a door that does'nt have too be there all the time.

I have a regular pocket door (where the door goes into the wall) on one of the rooms in my basement and I love it. I would practically put them on every doorway in my house if I could as they give a clean look and give you more space. My guess is that you are going for this type because you don't feel like tearing down the wall and rebuilding it. If so, I certainly don't blame you. I think it could look cool if done right based on the look of the two rooms and how it blends into the rest of the space. It looks like there are some pretty cool possibilities based on some of the pics on their site.

Appreciate all your thoughts and opinions...

I think I'll just go with a traditional pre-hung 36" door, and have it swing out into the arcade (instead of the workshop). It's near another door in the arcade, so I don't think I would ever put anything next to it. If I paint everything the same color as the wall, it should blend in nicely.

It'll be great not to have to take the heads off my pins, or take the door off its hinges. What a pain...

Just get yourself some backdoor beads.

Maybe you can get some made with an arcade design.

I grew up in a house full of those, they frequently come off the track and are a maintenance headache. The walls collect alot more dust with those also. They are an effective space saver, but unless your crammed my vote is stay with a traditional door.

Also, if you have kids (or drunks) and the door is mostly closed, definitely stay away from a pocket door.

I used track doors, though I mounted mine on the ceiling/ upper door jambs rather than the wall face. I used them in 2 areas when I remodeled my old basement from this:

Then later, I hinged an old 70's mirror to serve as the breaker box door:

Unfortunately, I don't have a good pic of the track doors mounted, as they were to the left and right of me while taking the 'after' pics *sadface* I did like them, but they seem more utilitarian to me. I wouldn't use them in my house now.

Well I found a pic that caught a corner of one of the doors. You can see where I mounted the track. Mine slid past each other and I had 3 of them in this opening:

PB - wow, that's a hell of a transformation! I always wondered what it would be like to build something with those glass blocks. Very nicely done!

Hey thanks John. The really cool thing was that I had backlighted that glass block bar with Blue LED's. Why I never snapped a pic with those lights glowing is beyond me. I no longer live at that house.
