Ok.. now I am confused. I have this dead "WG 25K7501" out of a Hydro Thunder that needs new life. Figured I'd start by replacing caps and the flyback. I ordered said parts and started to tear it down. I kept thinking "This looks like a U5000"

Then I see this sticker: "REPLACE WITH K7500 CHASSIS ONLY!".

Ok, What gives guys? Is this a K7000? Is this a U5000? Some Frankenstein in-between?

Frame transistor for width control is only on k7500 EgA chassis (which DOES NOT belong to the "k7000" cga family)

U5000 has the jumper connector to switch between CGA and ega. Technically, the U5000 (and u2000) are the Frankensteins between the 7000 family and 7400/7500 chassis.

Thank you. So the U monitors are the "selectable resolution" versions? But this one that I'm working on is a K7000 and Medium res only?

I bought a K7000 cap kit and flyback. I just want to make sure they will work with this monitor.

Everytime I think that I understand 90s Wells Gardner, I find out that I actually don't.

you have a k7500 hard set to medium rez only not selectable

You have a k7500 and medium res only. It is NOT a k7000 (it's confusing) and the cap kit and flyback for a k7000 will not work for a k7500.

The U5000 is selectable CGA/EgA, the U2000 is CGA only.

K7500 only works with K7500 yoke. hence the neon green label stating you can only replace with K7500 chassis only lol

that generation began with the U5000, which itself replaced the 25" K8000 for medium res applications. I think Wells-Gardner forced the U5000 to market too fast and didn't iron out the wrinkles in an effort to wash away the plagued K8000 and wound up with a lot of problems later. the U2000 was a little more stripped down variation that was standard res only that I think proved more reliable. then came the K7400/7500 which were dedicated standard res and medium res respectively which simplified the circuitry more. I personally think the image quality took a hit compared to the U5000 and in most areas they're more solid, but they introduced new problems that can emerge, most notably with the flyback Focus/Screen adjustments walking on their own. as these are all over 25 years old now they have a lot of mileage on them. the K7400/7500 is one of few models I just suggest replacing flybacks. gamefixer and I used a ring tester on the OEM flybacks and they apparently all failed the same way, so there was some flaw in the design somewhere.

repair companies had to make their money somewhere I guess.

Thanks guys. So I need to order a K7500 cap kit and flyback then? The k7000 stuff I ordered is not going to work on this one. I'll dig through my spare monitors and see if I have a K7000 these can be used on.

Ah ha! I had this on the shelf. THIS is a K7000 right? So it will be dual res?

Ok, I'm going to have to make some kind of chart for this and hang it in my storage room. I'll get the correct cap-kit and flyback for this k7500 (which apparently is not a K7000 even though this K7197 is?!) and then I'll use the parts I ordered in this spare K7197 because I had marked that it was dead years ago when I tested it. I could use a "hot-spare" standard res 25" anyway.

They have a P number silk screened on it which I find is the best method to identify them

P538 K7000 std res (25"/27")
P717 U2000 std res
P736 U3000 VGA
P738 U5000 std res/med res selectable
P763 K7400 std res
P793 K7500 med res
